I have reinstalled windows xp several times and it has installed smoothly and everthing. But when I restart I get this error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have tried installing sp1 to see if it helps and nothing helps. What can I do?

Try and replace it with this one. Scan it with your anitvirus before you use it. It should be clean and norton said it was (its from this machine) but just to be safe.

DLL file

Please tell me when you get it downloaded so I can kill it.

Also is it even there?

Thanks, that just means that I have to make a Win98/ME boot disk with a system that has no floppy drive. But I can probably burn the boot disk to a cd then boot from the cd. Thanks again Remy!

No problem I just hope you get it fixed. :) Oh yeah I bet you could use the 98 boot CD if you have it...
