winxp and ntfs

if i convert my winxp fat32 partition to ntfs will there be any way to access the files with a command line only? like a bootdisk or something? i don't feel comfortable without command line access, as it has saved my ass several times from having to do a full format/reinstall.

also, how do i prevent winxp from searching through zip files in it's search utility?

You mean is there a way to get into your operating system even if it won't boot? With 98 you used to be able to use a floppy and boot off of that to access your disks. For 2000 and XP you will need to use something called the recovery console (do a search in the help and support section of your computer). Basically you boot off of your OS CD and the I think the option is to REPAIR, and then repair by using the recovery console. You will need to know your Administrator password as it makes you log in for security reasons. I would search on recovery console commands and then print those out and put em in a binder. Saved my butt many times, and there are lots of usefull tools in there. You can change the startup type for a service if its hanging your computer (had it happen, my fault).

The second question I don't know the answer to.

yeah i mean accessing files like how the win98 bootdisk does. i've used the recovery once with win2000 before and i didn't like it. i need to do stuff like go in and manually copy certain files to somewhere else, can recovery console allow me to do that?

Yes, the Recovery Console allows you to fully access your files in NTFS, but you have to make some changes to the security settings before you are given access.

To find out how to get full access to your files, please read this.

Exactly. Recovery console is really more useful at the end of the day than DOS ever could be. It lets you change your operating system in ways that just isn't possible with the regular DOS prompt.

Here is how to boot up ntfs from a floppy. You really need to have this. Sometimes some of the files needed to boot from the hard disk become corrupted. This will boot up into Windows XP not just to a DOS prompt.
ntfs boot diskette
