WinXP and network connection problems

Just did a fresh install of WinXP Pro. Everything is working fine except that it is very sluggish when trying to connect to the other machines on my home network, especially my Win2K server. It will eventually connect, but it takes anywhere from 10-15 seconds. Once I'm connected, file transfers are flaky also. Sometimes I will have a successful/fast transfer and other times not.

My network consists of 6 machines sharing cable/networked with a Linksys router. All my settings seem to be right. They are the same as my previous settings were with Win2K Pro. Drivers are all updated (I even put in a new NIC which didn't help). I use NETBEUI for internal network. I'm also familiar with this tweak. I used it successfully in Win2k but it's not making a different in XP.

Are you hard coding the IPs? or DHCPing? If you are using Netbeui and are not on the same subnet you will still be able to transfer but you will see performance issues. I would use Ipconfig /all from the command prompt to see what IP you are getting. Have you tried switching cables? I had an issue that was similar with a W2K box that ended up being a bad cable...

I assign internal IP's w/DHCP off and the subnet is ok. Also switched the cable w/o any change. I've never had a problem with my setup until I changed over to WinXP. I'm to the point where I'm considering going back to Win2K buy I'm sure it's gotta be something within XP that I'm missing.

I've already deleted that registry key as I mentioned in my original post. I'm still getting delays in connecting to other machines. There has to be another service or something that is affecting connection speed. Anyone else have any ideas what might be causing my slow connections.

I have had trouble using W2k machine as server with an XP machine.

Had to switch and let XP be server.

Don't know enough about networking to figure why, just know that worked.

How are you using NetBeui on the XP system? Last I checked Netbeui was not an option to install... I think that part of the problem is the 2 protocols that you are using on the local network... On one of the systems drop the Netbeui and try to connect to that machine and see if you can connect quicker. In the past I have had problems on a network where I was not using a single set of Network Protocols.

I have used a setup similar to this for some time with a combo of Win98 and Win2K machines and never had a problem. I didn't get the slowdown with conecting to other machines until WinXP. You can use NetBEUI with WinXP. Check here. I'm thinking WinXP has some service running or something that is affecting my connection speed. Once I'm connected, usually 10-15 seconds later, everything seems to be ok.

Xeno-

You need to read!!

This was stated in the initial post.... If you are going to spend a lot of thime here I would learn to carefully read the posts

Strych9-

I would suggest that you bind the entire network to the TCP protocol and that way you will can see if it is an XP thing or the Netbeui. I looked at the site that you posted about GRC and from what I read the majority of it is directed at 95, 98 and NT. Now usually the NT can apply to W2K but going to XP (with a Protocol that quite a few people feel may have outlived it's usefulness) may be part of the problem. I am running XP at home on 2 systems with 2 W2K servers and a RH 7.1 box on the network. The only time that I bring Netbeui online is when I need to Ghost a partition across the network (and that is because I am too lazy to rebuild my boot diskette to deal with DHCP and the servers IP addy) Give it a try and see what you get.

Yeah maybe it's time to put NetBEUI to rest. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the help.
