winXP and my computer fans?

I just purchased a sony vaio with XP home installed. everytime I power on the machine a very loud fan comes on but goes off after a few seconds. After the fan goes off, the computer runs great and very quietly. A few games of mine will not run under XP so I formatted and put ME on. But with ME installed the fan never quiets. It runs really loud all the time. I tested this theory by reinstalling XP and as soon as it rebooted the fan shut off. All this to ask, what is causing the fan to turn off (or quiet) and is there a way to do this with ME until XP produces some compatability updates?

Thanks for any help.

I have tried compatability mode with no success, they only crash faster and send an error report when I do that. the two games I have had fail so far are Thief2 and black and white. If those would start working, I would be happy with XP. thanks for the suggestion. any other ideas would be great. I have formatted and reinstalled with no success as well.

Actually my fiancee has a similar but somewhat different problem to yours.

She bought a Sony VAIO slimtop computer earlier this year that came pre-loaded with ME. Under ME it never seemed to run the fan. We upgraded the machien to WinXP and now the fan runs all the time. the computer is in the basement and it's quite cool down there so I don't think the temps are really any higher. I think it might be a driver issue for the mobo.

They have some sort of driver that is adjusting the fan speed based on the temperature in the case. My Compaq servers do the same - very loud at startup but once the drivers load, things quiet down. Check their website and see if they have any Me drivers - mobo, power, etc.

thanks a ton for the info. I know of others who are playing both games, but I did try updating it first thing. I will try for drivers and see if that helps.

For anyone interested I found an executable on the sony driver cd called sonyfanc.exe. On the INF it is called Sony fan control, but I cannot find a me version of it on sony's sight. Well this is where I will start looking, maybe it will help someone else as well.
