WinXP 64bit Edition Delayed, Again

News.com has an article up stating that Windows Server 2K3 SP1, Windows Server 64bit Edition, and WinXP 64bit Edition have all been delayed until the first half of next year. I have nothing nice to say, so I won't say anything at all.

How would this affect Longhorn?

Nope, Windows 64 is like Windows XP for 64-bit. Longhorn is the totally new operating system that will represent Windows next generation offering. Most would speculate that it will come in 32-bit and 64-bit.

Yep. XP 64 is simply a 64-bit version of XP Pro. Except for the 64-bitness, there are no features in XP 64 that are not in XP Pro (although newer software like WMP 10 might be included). XP 64 is currently in public Beta stages.

Longhorn is the next generation. XP and 2k3 were based on the 2k kernel, which was, in turn, based on the NT4 kernel. Longhorn uses an entirely new kernel (although probably partially based off of 2k3) and it represents a technology jump like the one between Windows 3.1 and Win95, and the one between Win9x and Win2k/XP. It's also supposed to include IE 7, last I heard. Longhorn is currently in Alpha stages.

The delays...

I won't even get xp-64 now. My A64 can run in 32-bit mode a little longer. I'll wait until Longhorn is released and pick up a 64-bit version of that.

jeez, your going to wait another 2-3 years before you go 64bit?
I can go native 64bit right now... if I had a AMD64 machine that is. 😉

1 year, hopefully. 2006 for Longhorn.

My money is on 2008, personally. I would of thought that it may be out by 2006, but I was also expecting that MS would have AMD64-WinXP out by this month or the next... However they don't even have SP2 for WinXP out yet.

MS never had a good track record for this sort of stuff.

sucks for AMD 🙁

I've been waiting for WinXP-64 before I invest in a AMD64 chip.

XP sp2 takes advantage of atleast one of the best parts of the AMD64 chips. Don't wait. Except for money. You can wait for that.
