WINWORD.exe has generated errors!!!

Every time I close MS Word, I get the following error message:

WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

I also get the error when I go into "Tools/options" and try to change any settings. I want to change the settings because all editing features are off for some reason.

I have tried to repair Word--No luck. I have also completely removed Word and reinstalled-- No luck. After reinstalling, all problems, (including the editing features being turned off), are the same.

I can use it all day long with no problems. It only happens when I close the program, or try and change the options. If I could change the editing options, it wouldn't be so bad, but I miss those features!!!!

Any ideas??? Thanks in advance!!!

I forgot to say in my first message-- This problem started after I copied and pasted a web page to Word. It changed all the settings, and would not let me change them back. All I get is the error message and a shut down. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Have you tried UNinstalling it, then deleting its derectory manually, then reinstalling? Also, perhaps your system is infected with a virus. The W32 CIH or whatever it'c called used to crash lots of apps on my PC.

Thanks for the replies. I did a virus scan and did not find anything. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did not delete the directory manually. Do you know what specifically needs to be deleted to be able to start off fresh?

Thanks

Yes, the "Program Files\Microsoft Office" directory 🙂. However, in case a file in your \Windows\System got corrupted that comes with Office but does not get uninstalled, you're in trouble. Download "Process Explorer" from SysInternals.com and see which files are in use by the WinWord process, then delete those files unless they belong to Windows, of course.
