Looking pretty bad out there. Some of you in the south will be getting ice storms. Bitter cold in the North, and substantial snow showers in the NE. Hope everyone stays safe.

Right now they are calling for heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain. I really hope it's not like hurricane Sandy that damaged most of trees, power, cable, and phone lines here. It also killed my UPS so it will be unplugged once the power starts flickering.

I'm in WNC, the area hammered by Helene last year.
The forecast started out as up to 30 inches of snow, 4+ days ago.
Days later it is now zero snow and an inch or more of freezing rain and sleet.

Generator checked, 20 gallons of gas for it, plus 90 pounds of LP (it's a dual fuel generator)
The furnace has been rewired to easily switch over to run off generator power, plus extra wood for wood stove has been brought in.

Losing power when single digit temps are forecast not a fun perspective, but hoping we're ready.
 
Looks like the forecast has moved a bit north today. Was kind of looking forward to a chance for snow in San Antonio, as it's exceedingly rare here. Especially since it would be coming over the weekend if so, so wouldn't be too worried about the city shutting down like it did with the last time the polar vortex really slipped this far in Feb 2021. But looks like all we'll get is some incredibly annoying freezing rain.
 
Regardless of the accumulation, it’s gonna stay on the ground for a week or more!

Temperatures are not forecast to go above 27° for the next eight days!

If the rain/ice mix becomes too heavy the power outages will be massive. I am duel fuel with a NG fireplace.

Says "extreme cold warning" in chicago area. It was like 15 degrees and a bit windy here, so, i wore long pants rather than shorts, and i had to zip my jacket.
If it does get cold anywhere, i hope people do common sense things like wear long pants, jackets, hats, and gloves.
 
Hopefully none of that hits us, my city is still not done clearing the streets from the last storm lol. Lot of streets down to 1 lane only, then we got that freezing rain for one day earlier this month and it fouled up everything. Streets are super rough now because of all the uneven ice. A real mess.

Almost got stuck in the Tim Horton's drive thru today too. Had to put it in 4x4.

Temps are going down to like -30 so I doubt we'll get any snow.
 
Staying home is my plan, so spent the last 2 days running errands, getting supplies, fuel, etc., but wasn't bad as it was in the low 50s.

I was a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years, and out there in all sorts of bad weather from blizzards, ice storms, forest fires, including when two hurricanes came through here a week apart in 2005. Wife had to worry about me being out there, now it's my turn as one grandson is a firefighter/paramedic, and the other just became a state trooper last year.

Glad I moved to FL a few years ago!! I don't miss the cold and snow from the Albany NY area!
I can walk outside if the sky cooperates and watch the Cape Canaveral area rocket launches with ease!

I lived in Baudette when I was a kid. Absolutely loved it because our house was at the top of a hill right above the river. My mom won a walleye fishing contest there one year. Lol.

No way I could survive up there now.

Albany is a nice little city. Lovely downtown with all the old buildings and architecture. Was there once when it snowed about 12 inches overnight and everything shut down.

Exactly! We’re been prepped since yesterday. Wife ran over and made sure our kids weren’t caught unaware of the situation.

No...fuck that nasty ass tule fog. That shit is wicked. At least in the snow, you can USUALLY see what you're going to crash into...where as in the tule fog, you often can't even see the end of your hood, let along a few hundred feet in front of you.
We're heading into the dryest January on record. IIRC, 15 days consecutive with no measurable rain. Chilly too. Temps are dropping into the low-to-mid 30s.
 
Rain and howling wind (5-7mph) expected here today. The bottom drops out Sunday night with a low of 38F predicted.
 
-19F here in SW Wisconsin this morning. The dew point is -29F which is funny, the wind is really whipping making it feel like -30F. But that is actually par for the course in January. The high will be -11F tomorrow, and yes I'll probably take the girl dog and run in it. In recent memory we have had an honest -40F and most of us still go to work.

It's going to start snowing around 7pm tomorrow until about 9am Sunday. Then it switches to a wintery mix and then freezing rain for about 6 hours before switching back to snow. Monday through Friday shows single digit low temps. That will be fun if our electric goes out. /s
