WINS configuration question...

I have two machines, side by side, in a lab; both are configured using DHCP for dynamic IP resolution.

The domain they are set to login to is "Epidemiology", which corresponds to a server that I have setup in the lab: 128.95.XX.YY

This server is also running a WINS service, and is using DHCP forwarding (it forwards it to the UW DHCP servers, so they assign the IP addresses).

On one of the computers (Machine D), the WINS Configuration is set to "Disable WINS Resolution."

The other computer (Machine Q), however, needs to be set to "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution," or has to have WINS Enabled with 128.95.XX.YY (server address) entered, in order to be able to login to the domain.

Why is this? Why does one work with WINS Resolution disabled, while the other requires the DHCP tab to be clicked?

Hope this is enough info.

Depends on the ip address and subnet masks used.

In order for Netbios over TCP/IP to function correctly you need to be able to resolve various netbios names to IP addresses. If all machines are on one IP network/subnet then you can find names via broadcasting. If you have separate networks/subnets then you'll have to use a WINS server. Provide the IP addresses/subnet masks of the machines in question and I'll try to help. Also how is your DHCP scopes set up (what variables are you providing - domain name, win server, netbios node type, router, etc)

Any size network generally benefits from a WINS server. All windows boxes should use the WINS server for name resolution and be setup as HYBRID nodes.

It would also be helpfull to know if we are talking NT 4 or 2000 here. The funny thing is M$ improved WINS to what it should be in 2000, just when they have this big switch to AD and "dynamic DNS".
