480 hours is quite a bit of Community Service time. She wasn't let off too easy.

well the thing is, 5000 sounds like a lot, but it's not like this was at walmart, where 5000 would be like the whole store or something. this was at a store where 5000 is not that much. its the equivalent of stealing like 80 bucks worth at walmart or something. nobody would get jail time for that if it were their first offense.
Last I checked the law wasn't relative to the quality of the merchandise.
"I stole a car, but it was a Kia, so that's just like stealing an rc car from Radio Shack or something."
Yah, that doesn't quite work. A thief thieving high-quality merchandise is just a thief with good taste 🙂
And yah.... she's extremely hot, imo.

OMG!!! That is so unfair. She shouldn't have got anything. SHE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!!!!
For the people here who's only knowledge about this case is what they see on TV here's the real story of what happened.
In Hollywood when high profile stars "like Winona" go shopping they DON'T have to checkout at certain stores. They have people assigned to them to wait on them hand and foot. They take what they want and leave the store. The store then bills the persons account each month for the overpriced stuff they got.
Now when Winona was in the store that day the person that was suppose to wait on her hand and foot was not doing her job right. When Winona walked out of the store with the $5000 worth over overpriced crap the security guard "who was just hired a few days prior" called the police and had her arrested.
What boggles my mind is the fact that the store manager tried to explain to the police and then the DA that the whole thing was a misunderstanding and that is was the security guards fault. The DA wouldn't have any of it and was set on making a high profile example of her

And you know this how? If this was the real case, the media would be ALL OVER the police. I live in NYC, and believe me, every time a cop or any sort of law enforcement makes even the tiniest mistake, it is everywhere the news. The would have eaten that up far better than any trial of winona rider. And if the manager of the store says they dont want to press charges, no charges are brought. That obviously wasnt the case. Sorry, I just dont buy it.
