Winmodems with Lucent Chipset?

Prince of Persia

I'm looking for a new modem, and I have read Modus post numerous times. =)

Now I just need to find a cheap isa/pci winmodem that uses the Lucent Chipset. Looking to be around 20-30 dollars? Thanks ahead of time.

Email Modus. He'll be happy to send you one for free. 😛

Or just wait.He wont miss this thread. 🙂

Yes, that AOpen FM56-PM that denilfloss mentioned is a good deal. It uses a Conexant (Rockwell) HCF chipset, which is the same sort of technology as the Lucent LT.

Honestly, LT winmodems are getting pretty tough to find these days. Lucent seems to have been muscled out by 3Com at the high end and Motorola and PC Tel at the low end (HSP). It looks like they're switching their focus to broadband technology, wireless, and professional DSP solutions.

Still, I'm sure you'll be able to find a decent LT winmodem if you look hard enough. Personally, I just go with the AOpen in my builds these days, but make sure it's the FM56-PM and not some other HSP model (if ping times matter to you, otherwise HSP is fine.)

Hold on.

Just did a search for "Lucent" on Pricewatch and came up with hundreds of hits, the cheapest of which is a Lucent PCI winmodem for $9. This looks too good to be true -- the shipping costs more than the modem! Anyways, that is a really good price and makes me wonder if Lucent and their manufacturing customers have switched to a new cheaper HSP chipset. I'm going to look into it.

Hmmm, the dealer sites generally don't say much besides "Lucent Winmodem."

Thing is, nine bucks is nothing. Just get one. To see if it is a true LT winmodem and not some new Lucent chipset, just download the latest LT drivers from Lucent. If they work, you've got a $9 steal. If not, you've still got a decent modem for the price of two extra value meals 🙂
