Winmodem - no data transfer? What?

Modem - agere 1648 chipset winmodem

I'm having connection problems.

I dial into earthlink, and connect. However,

there is no transfer of information (e.g. can't pull up a webpage, e-mail, etc)

when I picked up the phone while connected, there was silence. No DTMF, no dialtone, no modem noise, etc.

I've re-downloaded the proper driver from the Agere website, no success.
Un-installed and reloaded the modem - no success.

Last night took it to the office and tried to put it on the lan -- couldn't get any connection through my NIC, either.

Guys, I'm stumped.

The last change I made to my computer prior to the trouble starting was networking it to my parent's computer...backed up contents of their drive to mine prior to installing XP on their system.

Help?

I tried two modemsite modems in December. They would frequently give what I called "stealth disconnects." IOW, the modem would disconnect and the DUN icon in the tray would continue to look normal. In my case, when I picked up the phone I got a dial tone, not silence. Make sure you have the cord to the wall plugged into the right jack (usually marked Line or Telco). Use a phone plugged into a duplex jack or any other jack in your house other than the one on the modem to see what is actually happening. Better modems disconnect the aux jack on the modem while the modem is in use to prevent accidental disconnects.
. We could never resolve the problem and they went back to Hawaii on Monday (wish I could have gone along with them).

:brrrrrrrrr... It never got above zero here today.
