Hi all,
Further to my Win95 help post below, everything went well with the
reinstallation of Win 95 on my friends computer with the exception of the
&%&%*! Winmodem. It's a USR 56K x2 winmodem and windows won't recognize it.
I have tried:

1. Removing it from device manager and rebooting but windows doesn't see it
when I reboot.
2. Physically removing the modem, rebooting, shutting down, putting the
modem back in and rebooting.
3. Reinstalling the drivers but when I point towards the disk that came with
the modem, it doesn't list any files but I know that they are on the disk.

...in other words I am chasing my tail🙂)

In device manager it shows a "?" beside the device including the PCI USB
something or other and another PCI device as well.
I am tempted to have him go and buy a regular modem. Will this solve the
above problems? What about the reference to the PCI devices?

To be more specific, the offending winmodem is listed in Device Manager
under "Other Devices" along with PCI Bridge, PCI USB. They all have a "?"
next to them. Will solving the modem problem fix 'em all?


Any advice would appreciated.

What system do you have? If your motherboard is an Intel based system, have you installed the Chipset Inf Drivers?

If your system is a VIA chipset based system, have you installed the VIA 4-in-1 drivers?

It seems as if you have not, as Windows is not recognising the PCI bridges. Once you have installed the above, it should be able to recognise your modem.
 
Try disabling any unused ports you may have. Disable both serial ports in the back if unused. That will probably free up just the right irq for the modem. I think winmodems usually need to have irq 4.
 
Bump for the Chipset Driver installation. You need to do this first to make sure all PCI bridges and hosts are recognized. In addition this will also install yor HD Controller.
 
Thx for the info guys. The system is an older P 233 MMX. Andy is that a self extracting file from Intel?

Note that everything worked fine before I formatted the hd...weird 'eh??

...another question then...if it's a P 233 MMX, what chipset is it likely to have? I have to burn 'em to a cd and take them with me to his office.

Yes, that file is directly from Intel.

I am assuming that the chipset on your motherboard is a 430TX chipset with the information you have given. I doubt it would be one of the VIA or ALi SS7 chipsets.
