WinMgmt.exe errors???

I keep getting a dialog box popping up in Win 2000 Pro saying "WinMgmt.exe has created errors and will be closed by Windows. An error log is being created. You will need to restart the program". This happens every couple of minutes, but the system seems to keep running.

Any ideas WTF the problem is? It is a dual boot setup with W98SE, no problems when running W98. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Please post the Event Viewer's Applications and System error messages that pertain to WinMgmt. I presume there will also be some related errors having to do with performance counters / monitors. Are you overclocking?

This is from the drwatson log, the errrors occurs whether overclocked or not. Hope it helps, awfully long. That log file is getting HUGE!

Wasn't there anything in the Event Viewer's Applications Log or System Log???

The Windows Managment Instrumentation Service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 9 times. The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 millisecinds. Restart the service.


The Application Log reports:

Windows could not open the repository file. This could be due to insufficient security access to the system root :&quot;<%Systemroot%>&quot;\system 32\wbem\repository&quot;, insufficient disk space or insufficient memory.

I have plenty of free disk space (6 gigs out of 17) and memory usage seems normal (128 MB RAM).

My fingers are trembling over the keyboard &quot;format ......&quot;

Oops! I didn't mean that I wanted you to delete the Dr. Watson stuff. With any luck, one of the smarter people here will know what to do with it! Oh well, you can re-post it if someone asks for it, I guess.

Is this partition formatted NTFS? Are you logged in as an administrator, power user, user?

If the partition is formatted NTFS, I'd like for you to go to your \WINNT\System32\WBEM\Repository directory, right-click on it, choose Properties from the context menu, and tell me what it shows on the Security tab of that dialog.

Also, would you go into your Services applet, double-click on the Windows Management Instrumentation and the Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions services and report what the &quot;Log On&quot; tab of each dialog says about these services? I need to know if they are being logged on as System Account or as a user. (Should be system account.) Have you enabled any custom security policies or set special security settings on any of the sub-directories or files under %SystemRoot%?

This is only a starting point to try to rule out the possibility that the service is being denied permission to get to the repository.

Finally, have you installed any new software recently that might have farkled your registry?

Yikes! Looking back over this post, I see that I could have been more organized. Nonetheless, this will probably provide a starting point for us to use in figuring out what is going on. Besides, while we're marking time, someone who knows what s/he's doing may happen along to help us out of the quagmire!

Jim, thanks for your efforts for me , but I think I have the culprit! I upgraded my version of MusicMatch jukebox the other night and after I just uninstalled it I am no longer getting that f#&amp;^$!*^ error box popping up.

That's good news. I'm glad you got it sorted out. You might want to report the phenomenon to the vendor of that software.
