WinME vs. Win98SE

I have basically the same question. With Win95/98 upgrade versions, you could do clean full install by inserting old Win3.1 floppies. I'm planning to do clean install with the WinME upgrade for 95/98 version. Can this be done? I have the original Win95 upgrade CD and Win98SE OEM CD. Thanks.
 
Here what I got from Microsoft on the Windows ME upgrade.( Like pulling teeth with a pair of pliers trying to find out) If you ask me Microsoft is charging $60.00 for what use to be a $6.00 service pack; talk about increasing profit margins.

MUST have the previous operating system installed on the machine in question
in order for itself to install. It cannot do a clean installation on its
own. He further went on to explain that you would need to purchase the full
version of the Operating System in order to perform clean installations.

I *was* liking WinME up until I started getting random GPF dialog boxes for no reason. It has happened with different programs, not just IE5. Now I'm even getting BSOD screens. I figure it must be something I installed!

Strange thing... when my computer comes out of sleep mode, my computer keeps "hiccuping" every 3 or 4 seconds. As an example, when I move the mouse, it stops for a second and then moves again. If I'm typing an email, all action stops for a second.

Any ideas about this?
 
WinMe wins hands down. 98SE has many peoblems in it and ME is much more stable and fixes most of them, the final release is very good. definatley the best version of windoes aside from Win2k.

WinME is a joke. An absolute FARCE.

Win2000 is a stable, reliable platform that CAN run most newer games. Win 98se should be used in the case of not being able to run a game. or your POS aol crapola programs.

It makes me sick to my stomach to think that people are actually spending money on WinME.

Yes, you can use an upgrade as a clean install. I did it for the 95&98 upgrades.
Not sure if it will work for WinME, but give it a try.

After formating:

1. At dos prompt, make a directory named "temp".
2. Copy command.com to the "temp" directory. Rename it to win.com.
3. Again copy command.com to the "temp" directory. Rename it to winver.exe.
4. Run setup, it will ask you the directory to install, choose "OTHER", then type c:\windows
and u should be ready to go.

Hope it works.
 
Only been using it for an hour or so now, but I like it. My internet connection is "smoother" than it was in 98. I also noticed that in Win98, whenever trying to install the ATI TV Wonder drivers off the CD, Win98 caused the installer to crash 9 out of 10 times. It installed without a hitch in ME. As for being better, I dunno...I haven't played with all the buttons yet 🙂

Actually ,Me is faster than 98 or SE in my own experience!
It boots Swift and also has a feel of Win2K interface and is
Robust.
The system restore tool is just a wonder !
I installed bad drivers and when i tried reboot it hung ,
Then the System Restore tool came to my rescue. Pretty
cool it is.
 
I like ME,over all much more stability (my memory is only rated for cas 3 and I am at cas 2)win98 would crash and burn a lot but me is ok except that the software for my dsl doesnt like it so am forced to use a "trial version"untill (and that will be the day) that swbell supports it
Enternet300 1.3 to 1.4 is the software in question

Ultimately, WinME is no more different from Win98 SE than Win98 SE was from Win98. The difference are becoming less and less because there is so much that MS must make the OS work with.

Stability and game/multimedia performance are hard to achieve in the same OS, especially when it must run on tens of millions of different PCs.

I think that by early 2001, there will be enough upgrades and service packs for WinME that it will become the standard, just as Win98 is now.
 
yup, i agree with HepDude..thats most likely what will happen.

i think its just a matter of your system...if win98 is fully tweaked and stable [as is mine]...its fast, never use swap, i'm out of tweaks...i've applied them all...in this case chances are winME wont me much [if any] faster...maybe bootup will be faster but with me having a cable NIC it may be slower cause its already fairly fast.

if you dont have a tweaked system then winME may be a great improvement as some of the "tweaks" for win98 are somewhat applied by default in winME.

for me its not worth it cause i dont see much of the windows interface cause in win98 i use darkstep as a shell...i also used 98LitePro to install win98se so there isnt any web integration at all...[i dont like the "view as webpage" and that little animation in the top right corner of explorer]...so for me winME would just add a bunch of stuff that i would end up removing.

if you install over an allready messed up win98 then you arent getting rid of any of the garbage on your hdd or partition win98 is installed on and may lead to hassles.

go to dos, move your windows folder [or back it up] and do a clean install.
you dont have to format, if you back up your windir and important files then just do a del-tree from dos and install winME fresh.

i'm dual booting win2kPro and win98se and win2k ripps it up....only been using win2k for about 2 weeks and i love it...so stable and crisp feeling...once i get norton systemworks 2001 i will install winME.
 
Another vote for 98LitePro.....fast, lean, and stable. ME would be another exercise in removing new bloatware that I don't need and working around new conflicts.

Providing you have newer hardware and are willing to do a clean install, Windows ME IMHO seems to work as well as 98 SE with some additional features. Undecided if it warrants buying for people who already have 98 SE. I did notice that a couple of ME systems I built are having some random Blue Screens (for no apparent reason)...but on my two systems I have no problems. Of course there is no doubt that Windows 2000 is a much better operating system, especially it's stability and the way it handles IRQs.
 
I really don't feel compelled to upgrade. I only use Win98 for games now, and I haven't seen any benchmarks that show any increase in speed. most of them show ME as being a hair slower.

___As for the Windows 2000 Pro and Server fans, the one thing for us HTPC?ers (Home Theater PC users), is the lack of AC-3 pass-thru under Windows 2000. Win98 SE does give you this capability currently but not without some latency effects. These effects are not noticed for the most part but a QFE SP for Win98 SE is due out soon to fix this. Win98 (not SE) will never have the QFE patch made available to it. Win ME on the other hand is patched (or whatever you would like to call it) right out of the box. Windows 2000 will not have the WDM driver/AC-3 pass-thru capability until SP2 is released so it is a none player in the HTPC market using either WinDVD 2000 ver. 2.2.92 or PowerDVD 2.55.0620 or later with no DD/DTS capabilities. As for custom Timings and Resolutions to connect up to and synch to HD FP/RP/DV TV?s for the best display, Nvidia has yet to release the driver sets capable of this manipulation with Windows 2000. The Win98 SE drivers have had this capability via the ELSA cards driver package and/or by using Power Strip 3.0 beta for quite some time now. Both 3Dfx and Matrox have released beta drivers with this capability under Windows 2000 but again, until this capability is released, there are many HTPC users that will have to forgo Windows 2000 for the time being.

___My experience with WinME is that it is about as stable as Win98 SE using the latest HW and drivers. I say stable in that I haven?t seen a BSOD in about a month while using Win ME and it is good for ~ 3 ? 5 days between boots while having my 56K dial up open for days on end before system resources are down to the magic 25% forcing a reboot. Again, this is not Windows 2000 as everyone already knows. Windows 2000 can run for months or so it appears whenever I boot into that OS. I like the new interface but it is probably due to the Windows 2000 blue desktop and similar GUI ?

___Norton Utilities 2000 has a few issues but not many. I have read that Speed Disk causes problems with scrambled data but I have yet to see any. PowerQuest?s Drive Image Pro 3.0x and Partition Magic 5.0 cannot launch from the desktop except for partitioning second drives under Windows because of the inability to get to DOS after boot but work fine if you boot your system from a DOS boot disk. Norton?s Internet Security is supposedly having huge problems but Zone Alarm 2.1 works fine. Games work for me just as in Win98 SE so that is really not a problem either.

___I hope those that do decide to upgrade have as good an experience as I have had with MS products as of the last 2 years.

I've been using ME for about a week, problems so far....

1) Macromedia Dreamweaver crashes constantly, no BSOD or GPE, the program just freezes and I have to Ctnl + Alt + Del

2) I get buffer underuns everytime I try to burn a CD...never got them with 98SE.
 
Well i upgraded in hopes that my mouse would start working right since it works fine in windows 95 but not in 98 and se well it still doesn't work any now my modem isn't working right.... take me hours to open a pageat 49000 ..... pissing me off...... thats it i'm going to tripartion and run linux ,winblows me and win2k.... if anyone knows whats wrong with my modem drop me a line .... till that works i can't recomend this os
