Office Depot had several copies of these upgrades - Promotional Step-Up (it'll work if you have Win98 or Win98SE) discounted from $49.99 down to $22.22. Apply your $10 AOL sign up coupon, if still available

Final price would be $12.22 + tax

I know it's not a software to be excited over, but for $13, it's a deal

This item was on the clearance table, and it may vary from stores to stores.

Good luck

That seems like a pretty good deal. You can do a CLEAN install with this upgrade. I've done it and it works great for me.

Didn't find anything in a Seattle, WA store. This is probably one of those needle-in-a-haystack deals.

Simmike, which store(s) did you check? I can rummage through a few other in the area, and see if it really is a needle in a haystack deal.

The details are in the store. You have to sign up for AOL to get the 10.00 off, but I don't believe there is a long term commitment.

*I* didn't have any trouble with WindowsME. The makers of some of my hardware and my ISP did, though. Guess their mommies weren't around.

Just know what you're getting into before installing ME. I had a solid 20% reduction in overall performance. Rather than start a war here, I'll simply direct you to the software discussion forums where you can read thousands of horror stories.

ME does take away the ability to load dos drivers or run batch files in autoexec.bat and config.sys. There is a hack/patch floating around (might find it in the archives here in support) that gives back that ability, but I didn't like the hand-holding aspects of the OS...went back to 98SE that I dual-boot with Win2K as primary.

Edit: WinME patch here:DosPatch

Have done both a clean install and an update with ME. The clean install is definitely better but it still sucks in my opinion. It may have something to do with the clean install puter being in a network. In fact the Microsoft tech indicated that this os had numerous problems when run in a network. I'll try a clean install on the non-networked puter when my new hd arrives and see how that goes, but I'm going back to 98se on the networked one or upgrading to 2000.

Hey...if I can get a 98 WinMe promo upgrade for less than $25
I'll get it. I probably won't install it....but it'll probably
be worth a least $50 savings on the next Windows upgrade....
Look what you have to pay if you don't have Win98.....

What does WinME do better than Win98se, updated on the MS automated update site?

What advantages does it have? It seems to have network problems, which is a big minus so far as I'm concerned. Does anything offset that?

im using it right now...
it's easier to install... especially drivers.
it's quicker when i turn it on and off...
i like it... except for the occasional crashes i get (98 also had its share)

Slikkster's got it right. I just dumped WinMe to go back to 98se. WinMe will cost you not only the cash up front, but lots and lots of time and headaches.

Is it worth it to keep paying MS for these upgrades? I paid $80 for my Win98 2 years ago, I just don't want to pay them again now.

i like my 95 anyway. i will have to be dragged kicking and screamming into the code-bloated world of software upgrades. i uninstalled office 2000 and photoshop 60 unbeknownst to my superiors here with a nice scandisk, regclean and disk defrag to boot afterwards. i'll get one/two (the one on winchester in mem i know has plenty on the back to the bathroom) tho and give it to my potnas for latter christmas gifts. they don't know any better anyway.
thx much for the heads up, maybe this is a harbinger of the .44 and .22 sale

98se is way better than 95. Fewer crashes. Subtly better interface. More tools. Seemless to adjust to. Definitely should upgrade from Win98.

WinME is another fish entirely. A smelly one, by most accounts. So far. And not worth the hastle anyway.

Well, to each his own.

I have been running WINME since I built my computer in September, and the BLUE SCREEN of DEATH was not one of the tools that came with it, for real.
Not even one so far.

The only lockups I have had were User Induced. When I would Over-Overclock my system and when I added my new Vid card. The Vid card was a BIOS issue.

I turned off the System restore and my system feels faster than any I have used so far. (Of course my Duron 600 @ 953 helps that I'm sure)

I have never used W2K but I have owned and used 95, 98 and 98se, and for me, WINME is the best so far.
