WinME OS - Explorer.exe constantly freezing...PLZ help!

I'm posting this thread for a problem my brother is having with his current system. He's got a Compaq system running WinME and says that his Explorer.exe keeps freezing, causing all other applications to freeze. Even the keyboard does not respond. Only thing that works is the movement of the mouse cursor, but can't click on anything. After rebooting, Windows begins to load but takes forever to finish loading the desktop. Sometimes it doesn't load the desktop at all and just freezes.

Anyone have any feedback on what can be done? 😕

-He can try to reinstall WinME over.

or

-He can format and reinstall.

or

-He can buy Win98SE (if he wants to stay in the Win9x) or he can buy Win2k/XP (I HATE WINME!!!)

This is what he can do if it's just a problem related to the OS. But it may be another program that causes the crash or a hardware problem too. So first of all he should just try to reinstall the OS.

My best suggestion is to run win98 or better yet, 2k.
That'll probably solve 95% of your problem. But I do realize its time consuming to install a OS. If you do, DO NOT upgrade, do a clean install.

Sorry I couldn't help you with your problem, but ME is just the worst OS, IMHO ever mass distributed.

Yeah, I'm prefer my Windows 2.0 box hheheheheh

If he can't buy anything, just do a format reinstall.

Sounds like he's got something corrupted there..Since it is a Compaq, he should have one of those nifty restore cd's and should be able to boot from it, run repair and/or reinstall without formatting and go from there..Is this machine getting hot? Pull the lid and blow the dust out and off the cpu..Good luck.

IMHO, I think WinME is the worst as well. I told him the exact same thing...change the OS to 98 or 2k. But his concern is that he got his computer as part of a promotion for DSL with our local phone company and Compaq. WinME pre-installed and with no disc and no disc for drivers. So he's afraid that by changing to Win2k, his drivers might not work properly anymore. He also has a ton of MP3's and other stuff he doesn't want to lose if he wipes the drive clean.

I think he's just lazy. Most likely he will be changing to Win2k. Thanks to everyone for your input. You guys are the best. 😉
