I upgraded the OS from Win98 to WinMe and now I get a the dreaded yellow exclamation point in front of the ECP Port in Device Manager. I have tried removing the device and letting WinMe find the port again but it looks like it is loading the old Win98 driver for the Compaq A900 multi-function device instead of the standard MS port driver. I can't load the new WinMe A900 driver because the installation program says it can not communicate thru the ECP port. I can't get the port working because it is loading the wrong driver. A real catch-22. Any advice appreciated.

Well you made 2 huge mistakes. First, going from 98 to ME is a downgrade in my opinion (its very buggy etc). But the second HUGE mistake was upgrading! You should always do a reformat and fresh install, because of problems like this. Anyway, I would suggest reformatting and installing WinME fresh.

WinMe runs fine if you can ever get it configured properly. I have it installed on a couple of my kid's PCs and they very rarely crash. Wanted to upgrade the PC to WinXP but the friendly folks at Compaq decided that they won't build XP drivers for the printer/fax/scanner A900. It is not my PC so I really don't want to reinstall and restore over 6gigs or so of data and programs for my friend. I think I just need to find out which .inf file loads the driver so I can delete it. Problem is I don't know which one it is. The Compaq driver file is a self-extracting file so I can't unzip it to see what it loads. Any ideas on how to unzip a self-extracting file?

Winzip says it is self-extracting file and asks if I want to run it but will not extract it. Using Winzip 8.1.
