Using the much cheaper WinME "upgrade" version, is it possible to perform a clean intall without installing an old version of Windows first?

You can use any win ME stepup cd to do a clean install, if you have your original win 98 or win 98SE CD. You will also have to make (or have) a startup disk. Win 98 or 98SE with CD support.

Quoting the install manual that comes with the promotional package.

Caution - none of these answers are based on actually trying it.

The install manual is the same one that ships with all versions.

The promotional upgrade CD-ROM has printed right on it:

"This program will search your system..."

I won't be able to definitively answer the question, because my Win98 installation is only 6 weeks old, so I'm going to install WinME on top of it anyway.

To answer your question, YES you can do a full install with the UPGRADE version. I just did it, and the manual that ships with the upgrade version gives you very good instructions. I used a Windows 98 formated drive with nothing else on it, ran the ME setup, inserted the WIN 98 CD when asked, and everything worked fine. I cannot speak for the STEPUP version of ME however, but that is not what you asked.

Yes you can do a clean install from the "Step-up" version too. You just need your Win98 CD handy.

Getting some conflicting reports here......
I have a 2nd PC that I use for fooling around with....
It's an AMD K6-233, 1.6G WD, 64 megs RAM with Trident 4 meg video.
I think I'm going to get the stepup ME, reformat the HD, and check it
out.....
Buy.com has it for $49.99, free shipping, no sales tax (for me) and
I'll get a $10 coupon from buy.com for future purchases.....

As you know, there are three versions of WinME: Full, Upgrade from Win98, and upgrade from Win95.

Yes, you most definately can do a clean install from the stepup version of WinME. I just picked mine up for $49 and did a clean install with it. From what I understand, the cheaper version is put out for a limited time to give a price break for those who upgraded to Win98. Imagine that, Microsoft FINALLY giving a price break....who woulda thought it??
