WinME freezes when using Internet Explorer.
I have upgraded to winME and done a clean install of winME and still have the same specific problem.

This cannot be a video driver issue because ALT CTL DEL twice won't restart the machine.

I asked this a couple of months ago and apparently nobody was having the same problem.

Now that most people have upgraded to winME, I would like to ask the same question...

I hope that I am not the only one alone.

I've had similar problems. It's not so much a "freeze" as it is a "hang". Sometimes when I have multiple IE windows open and enter a URL, IE will hang for up to 30 seconds before it will "click" through to the site. It's extremely annoying, but I hope they come out with fix for it soon. As far as the rest of ME goes, I've had no real problems....

Yepper! IE5.5 doesn't like me too much these days either! I noticed the freeze almost immediately. It really hates the Anandtech home page! Freezes solid there most times. I reinstalled ME twice hoping to resolve it but had no success. I know it's IE related as Netscape 4.75 zooms around all over without even any Java locks which it is famous for. Someone suggested simply re-installing IE5.5 again and I just may try it! Have any of you tried that yet? I'm curious and would really like to use IE again.

Okay seems I've resolved the freezing and even the powering down of my monitor allthough that one is indeed weird but it did happen only when I had IE5.5 running. I installed the latest build 5.50.4134.0600 of IE5.5. The version of IE that comes with WinME is build 5.50.4134.0100. It hasn't frozen once in the last 24 hrs nor has the monitor powered off. I got the latest build of a Maximum PC Magazine CD. I'm sure the version available from Microsoft is the same. It simply overwrote all the files and updated my system setting automatically upon restart and things are back to normal. Hope this helps someone out.

I am having the same problem.....
After I type in a url it gives me some kind of error and quits explorer. Keeps happening untill I restart the machine, then it's fine again for a while.
I will download the newer IE and see how it goes.

Running latest IE 5.5 version, there is a system hesitation, during which the slave drive comes out of "sleep mode": drive spin-up is audible. Takes 3 or 4 seconds. What's annoying is that there's nothing on the slave drive that IE needs to look at, it just wants to wake the slave drive before continuing what it was doing on the primary HD. Might be HD cache related. Happens in WinME & Win2000.

Glad to see your working again. Interesting note: after upgrading to build .0600 I noticed the recommended updates on the WinME site aren't needed anymore! Take care.

I haven't had any problems with the explorer but have had many problems with system freezing up while playing games. I think Windows ME doesn't support video cards very well.

My friend had the same problem.
IE would lock up on him when scrolling.
He has a GF2 mx and Athlon KT133 system.
He tried just about everything and nothing worked until,
he updated to the nvidia drivers off the windows me update site.

hope that helps

(I have a GF2 and P3 on 815 system with ME,and I haven't had any trouble)

What about this problem I keep getting when i open My Computer:

"Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL Explorer will now close"

is anyone else getting this? or better yet, found a way to fix it

if i remember right, this was a problem in win98 first edition, but MS had a patch out like the next day.

i will try that new build of IE and see if that helps

i will keep you all updated

I was having the same problem too. However I just got a cable modem and the problem went away. I had a clean Me install and was using a Creative Labs 56k modem. I yanked it and droped in my dlink nic and now it works like a charm, could be a bunk modem driver installed by Me?
