WinME and Ports

I've been using WinME oem for a while now and I've noticed a problem regarding triple digit and higher ports. Ports from 129 and above are closed to incoming traffic. Even port 27015 unless a game opens the port first (HL:CS for instance has no problems joining games but I cannot host a game on that port). This problem applies to FTP-D's as well.

I am not the only person to have this problem and none of us have been able to find a solution to it. I supposed it is an attempt by MicroSux0r to stop stuff like BO but it takes it one step too far and prevents the ports from working. I can get an ftp client to connect to an ftp-d running in a port above 129 only if its in pasv mode(flashfxp) but i'm not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. This problem also applies only to TCP/IP because I could host a game between my winME system and a win98 computer through IPX.

I would appreciate any sort of insight/resolution to this problem because its preventing me from using my rapidly diminishing cable speeds (DIE @HOMO) to its full potential.

Well, I guess my first question would be is there any sort of firewall or router between you and the cable modem?

Nope, I run a straight @home cable modem to my winME box through a PCI NIC. I am running winICS on the winME box however.

I play an online flight sim called F-22 Raptor. Since installing Win ME I haven't been able to connect to Novalogics server to play. Could this be my problem?

I was able to play through Zone Alarm with all previous versions of Win 9X! I also can play on my LAN without any problems using IPX so I am curious as to whether this may be my problem also. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Glenn

Hmmm... as long is there is no firewall software on it, it should work. I would try turning off ICS and then trying it.... just to see if that is part of the problem.

Thanks for the reply BaDaBoom- How Do I "turn off" Internet connection sharing? Uninstall or is there a box to check somewhere. I can't seem to find anything except for maybe uninstalling it?

Thanks
Glenn

I don't have an ME machine near me to look at, but I think it's the same as win2000 in that there is a check box you can uncheck for a network connection or a tab on the TCP/IP properties page under the network neighborhood properties.

Thanks again BaDaBoom-

That allows me to access the server and play the game just fine now, but momma gets a little impatient with my enjoyment of the game!😉 Someone needs to come out with a fix for this!🙂

So by turning off winICS, I can finally host things properly?

Heh, time to kick my brother off the other comp 🙂

I think what is happening is that when you have ICS on, it is like having a nat router in front of your server. So even though you are on the computer with a direct connection to the internet, everything first hits the nat (even if it is for that same machine) so it is just like that server is just another client machine. Perhaps the games you are trying to start don't work behind ICS. There won't be a fix for it since this is by design. What you can do is setup a Cable/DSL router, linux router, or proxy/nat program which has more options that will allow you to forward the ports you need.

I removed ICS and downloaded and installed Sygate Internet Manager. Everything works just fine now! Guess we'll have to wait until the next generation of ICS for them to get it right!

Thanks again all!

It's funny how different everyone's experience was.

I was using SyGate and had nothing but problems.

Over the last 24 hours, I've installed WinME and configured ICS instead of SyGate, and now everything works fine on my LAN.

I had sygate 3.0 installed when I was still running win98se. I just never got around to checking for sygate updates when I heard 3.0 didn't work for winME. Now it looks like things are running fine. I haven't tried to host anything yet cause I just did a clean reinstall of winME to wipe out winICS though I'm quite sure it works(resume through mIRC works again). My only beef with this new sygate is that it seems to fail newnet IRC's insecure proxy scan the first couple times. After 4 or so tries, it logs in fine.

Oh, also, I would like to know if there is any way for that sygate logo to not popup when I boot.
