winlogon.exe application error

Hi guys,
I keep getting the error message "winlogon.exe application error - The instruction at "0x77efa075" referenced memory at "0x00..00". The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate". And when I click on OK I am taken to a blue screen saying win has been shut to prevent further damage. I am getting the same blue screen even in safe mode and because of that can't load up windows in any way to fix this issue. I'm running win xp and the machine is a dell inspiron laptop. Please help me with any way to fix this.

Note: At times I get the blue screen with a different message saying "The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of ... The system has been shut down"
