Anyone going to jump on wings of prey?
http://www.airwargame.com/eng

Sort of reminds me of BF1942 air combat. I'm sure it's more sim-like but anyway...
This looks to be one of a handful of new quality combat flight-sims hitting the market.
Think I may just give it a go.

It looks really cool but like you said it looks very sim like which is bad cus then you'd need to buy the expensive ass flight sticks and it's just too damn confusing cus I tried playing IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 and that's too confusing and this'll probably be more of the same.

Looks good. There's already a ton of arcade fliers out there, it's been years since a good combat flight sim was released.

edit: There's a demo. Downloading. Will play tomorrow.

Played the demo. It is a pretty solid WWII fighter sim. Only complaint is for whatever reason the game wont recognize the buttons on my Saitek joystick.

The graphics are beautiful. And the game play on simulation mode pretty tough.

I saw this and was going to download the demo, but I think it asked me to pay to download the demo or I had to jump through too many hoops to get it so i said screw that.

it does look interesting though.

I saw this as well. Their advertising budget must be nil because I haven't seen it advertised anywhere. I'm curious about gameplay so anyone care to write up a quick detailed review?

I considered it, but I thought it was more of an arcade type game. Might try it now that I know it isn't.

I'm still holding out for the A-10 expansion to Blackshark and the "never to be completed" BoB game.

The game is identical to Birds of Prey on the 360 and PS3. It's alright. It has an arcade and a realistic mode. Not as good as Il-2. Custom missions are pretty limited and the main campaign is short. You don't have a choice of what nation you fly for either.

Ahh ok, answers the rest of my questions, I'll pass.

Well, it's not a bad game. I just felt that it needed more meat to it. I haven't tried multiplayer though.

I'm not super hardcore, but I want a "new" IL-2 type experience.

In fact, Blackshark is just a little too hardcore for me, flying a helo at that level of realism isn't fun, it's work.

It's been around and updated constantly for years. I've been playing for 7 or 8, and I'm decent but get my ass handed to me frequently by the guys who really know what they're doing. It's VERY difficult to become a good dogfighter, and you learn something new every flight. There's Main Arena FFA-type gameplay, weekly and monthly realistic scenarios, and special event type stuff like KotH dogfighting. Absolutely, positively worth the $15 per month.

Anyway, a lot of real pilots say it's the best physics flight model around. Worth a download.

I remember reading in a pcgamer or maximumpc awhile back that there were supposed to be a bunch of upcoming combat sim titles coming from Russian developers.

Bah, they always make Yaks and Lavochkins overpowered... biased Russkies! :)

I bought the full game.

Here is my review. The game is not as complex as the IL-2 series. The graphics are pretty amazing compared to IL-2 but not really great compared to games of today though. The nice thing, it runs smooth and has no stutters which is very important when dogfighting, and it has a high FPS.

The game tries to come off as being more realistic (with options) but all it does is turn off the HUD for the most part.

The single missions (you can play them and unlock more, etc) get harder as you go, and some are ridiculous where you start playing later the later missions.

I was playing 1 mission where you have a flight of 4 in a LA-7 airplane (1 bomb each or maybe 2), and you have to blow up ground targets. You are lucky with your flight to kill the 3 anti aircraft guns that you have to blow up at first. Once you blow them up, it tells you to blow up another 3, then another 3, and another 3... In other words, if it was "realistic" you'd never win, you'd run out of ammo and bombs before you ever got through the first 3 but you have to blow up 12+ of them...

You literally HAVE TO DIE and use your "continues" (to put it in Arcade terms) to respawn with more bombs. I'd run out of ammo and bombs and would kamakazie into more ground targets to respawn with more ammo and bombs. The game is not designed around being able to successfully complete missions on realistic mode, meaning limited ammo and fuel and with no respawns. It has designed missions for unlimited ammo/bombs and unlimited respawns.

In the end, the game is arcady even though it tries to advertise itself as being more realistic. Because of the nature of the respawns and mission types, it completely draws me out of the game, and I can't recommend it for any serious flight simmer. Not to mention there are no dedicated online servers so you can't play with real players to get away from their ridiculous missions.

I have not tried campaign mode yet though.

That's a pretty solid looking combat sim. I just need one that has the community that Air Warrior had back in the day.

Nice, I missed this my first time through the thread. I recall hearing about it, but couldn't remember what it was called. Do you need a solid flight stick to play, or can a fairly generic joystick work?

Hola Vrolok,

A fairly generic one can work, I'd say. In the low-end joystick range you'd really want a twisty stick so that you can use your rudder easily. The more advanced dudes use rudder pedals in addition to a stick, but I can't be bothered, hah!

There's a free trial and Offline mode is free, I believe, so you can try out your stick and see whether it's THAT bad or not. Anyway, AH can be addictive if you start to get into it... I remember specific dogfights from years ago and taking part in large base-taking sorties and historical missions. Such good memories. :)

Edit: In case you guys get interested, here's an evaluation page of most of the planes in the game by one of the longterm players/pilots.

I downloaded some flight sim game from Steam when they had their holiday sale. It was Combat Wings: Battle of Britain. Graphics aren't bad but not great. There is an arade mode and a sim mode. I only played the arcade mode so far and its kind of fun for some short game play. I haven't unlocked any other planes than the starter one yet so I'm getting a bit annoyed there.

Brandon, thanks for the review. I spent a while staring at this game deciding whether to buy it, and hoping deep down inside that it was actually a realistic sim rather than an arcade/console game. Your review helps a lot, I know not to waste the time or money, hehehe.
