I have a friend who has some art opening up at a local gallery, and he sent me an invite. I wanted to bring him a couple bottles of wine to share at the opening, but I don't really drink it and don't know what is the appropriate type of wine to bring to an event like this.

I'm not too worried about cost, though I'd rather not buy the most expensive. Just something mid-range that would be popular to different types of people. I don't know if color matters (red/white) I assume either would be fine....I think. Like I said I really don't know much about wine etiquette.

Any suggestions?

If you don't go with champagne, any $10 to $15 bottle of red wine would likely be fine. Safe to go with a merlot or cabernet.

I'd do a california zinfandel and a new zealand marlborough if I were looking for something benign and unoffensive.

My parents and their friends are not really wine drinkers, but they like Yellow Tail.

Maybe their cabernet savignon?

Doesn't an opening call for champagne, or some other sparkling wine?

Yeah I think they will have some of that for the formal unveiling, I'm just bringing some supplementary alcohol as a gift. It's 5 hours long so I figure the more the better.

They have some cool flavors. Is this something that can be bought at most wine and liquor stores?

Q. Where can we purchase Manischewitz wine products?
A.
During the entire year, and especially the Passover season, Manischewitz wines can be found at almost every supermarket, wine store, and drug store where other wine products are sold. If you are unable to locate Manischewitz wines where you normally shop, please drop us a note on our " Contact Us" e-mail page and we will assist you in finding a retail store for Manischewitz wines.

Any respectable wine place would have a wine taster ratings card in front of the shelf of the wine. Look for ones that are at least 90. You don't need to spend more than $15 a bottle. But don't buy 2 buck chuck, that shit's disgusting.

A good Californian cabernet sauvignon or merlot is good. Champagne would be the way to go to celebrate an opening.

If this is to go with food or an appetizer though I'd go with the red wine. You could get a bottle of Malbec if you want something a little bit different. Depending on how many people are coming, you're going to want two bottles I think. One bottle is about 4-5 glasses of wine.

Oh yeah and no screw tops. Make sure its got a cork or you went too cheap. And don't forget to bring a corkscrew. Chances are they won't have one at an art gallery.

do not get manischewitz it's overly sweet (added corn syrup!) wine made from the wrong kind of grapes (wine should be made from vinifera species, manischewitz is made from labrusca species). might as well bring that mangria crap from the other thread. or thunderbird, it will cost you less.

for a gallery opening get champagne.

Buy from a New York winery. You should be supporting local efforts. I know fuck all about wine, but I'd take something dry and red whatever that is. Go to the store and ask the merchant what a good red New York wine would be.

There are some awesome late season Rieslings out right now. This is a sweeter wine (think pear and peaches) and goes great with turkey/season foods this month.

You can't go wrong with labels like Hogue and Kendall Jackson. Their wines are generally under $20 and always excellent (even to wine snobs). I had a great Shiraz from Shofly(?) the other night. It was very fresh and smoky tasting, with a cherry finish. I think my host said it was $12.99.

I drink alot of wine, usually picking up a bunch of cases at once, of a good but cheap wine to eat everyday dinner with (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, and a few Zinfandel and Chardonnay because women love those). For special occasions I'll spend up to $50, off the advice of employees at a huge local wine store (has tastings weekly, beer making classes, everything).

If there is going to be champagne, I'd let the people running the event decide if they want to have it. Bring a red and a white, one dry and one sweeter, like a Merlot and Chardonnay, or a Pinot Grigio and Zinfandel. Find a good local wine store and ask their advice - they should ask you a price range, and help you out.

Unless it's a really high end gallery, just a couple of cheap magnums of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon is fine.
