my sister is visiting France and would like to bring home a nice bottle of wine. preferrably under $50. she likes chianti and i like merlots, if that narrows it down any. possibly something that is fit to age at home for a few years.

For chianti, go to Italy. For merlot, go to California.

Tell her to grab a couple bottles of burgundy.

Tell her to buy the wine from whatever "region" she is in. If she is in Champagne, buy Champagne.

also, aren't there certain wines that you drink right away and some you let age?

late night bump.

browsing through some wine mags, it looks like an '02 burgandy would be a good choice?

just buy Champagne there. thats what there known for.

believe it or not, california is now the leader in wine awards. weve allways had the right climate, but weve finally started making the most of it.

heres a list of wines that have won awards and gold medals in cali

Rodney Strong
Robert Mondovi
Estancia
Ravinswood
Simi
Franciscan
Clou Du Bua (spelling)
Sterling
Alice White
BlackStone

too many too list

if you can get the Wine Spectator mag, that had tons of info in there.

California might make some great wines, and from my dad as a great wine drinker i know this, but France still has some magnificent wine, however i can't say which.

Chile and some parts of spain are good aswell.

Tell her to buy from whatever small local vineyards she finds. The $20 bottles from local, small production vineyards are often just as good as the mass-produced, mass-market $100+ Californians, and they're a lot of fun because from one vineyard to the next you'll find something totally different.

EDIT: While we're discussing regions, gotta plug Argentina. Some of the best reds in the world. South Africa has some interesting wines as well.
