Wine is coming to Android

For those who don't want to click the link and are wondering how grape-based beverages have anything to do with Android, Wine is a program that lets you run native Windows applications from other OS's. I almost called it an emulator but then I remember what the acronym stands for. :)

It's a neat idea, but it sounds like performance is a problem, and Wine was always limited to only a limited number of applications that worked flawlessly.

I was amused to note that nowadays most of them are MMO games.

It will actually need x86 emulation to be useful since so few Atom phones are out there at this point.

Well that's going to mess up their acronym then. WINE supposedly stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator".

Ah, the OSS world and their propensity for recursive & nested acronyms.

Snarkiness aside, this definitely sounds cool, though I wonder how useful it is on smaller devices.

Hopefully that will be implemented at another layer so that it can benefit apps besides WINE and that will also mean the WINE acronym would still be accurate. =)
