Windws XP can't get to COM2

I was running 98SE with a 56k modem showing up on COM2. It ran OK

I switched to XP. It does not automatically recognize the modem. I tried to add it but COM2 would not come up for installation.

I keep reading about a "legacy" device vs PnP. What is teh difference and how can I tell which one I have.

Any help would be appreciated.

What brand and model modem? Did you visit the manufacturer's site and get the latest drivers for XP?

Manual says POWERCON 5634BTS. It is generic since sold by a number of companies.

THe mfg site says that the drivers ae the same for WIn 98,2000 1nd XP

I can't seem to set the IRQ (3 I think) and the COM port (2).

Let's make sure that you have a Com 2 recognized properly in XP.

Open up Device Manager and look at Ports. Is there a COM2 listed? If so, go to the Resources tab and check to see what IRQ it's set to.

Try to get the os to detect the modem on startup by removing the modem in properties and the yellow icon for pci communications device if its still there. This should cause on restart, the os to detect the modem, and then you can install the drivers and the os will assign a irq and com port. If this still doesn't work and you have installed the drivers properly, then you can install a com port manually with add hardware in the controll panel.
