Windows2000 Pro Hardware Profile question

I am studying the Windows2000 Pro Exam now and i have a question about the hardware profile setting. supposely, I have two computers, one is at work and one is at home. They both share the same Harddrive with the windows2000 Pro OS. (On the morning, bring the harddrive to work and on the evening, bring the harddrive back to home to work.)
Computer A: using removable IDE harddrive, using Intel IDE Chipset, Radeon Chipset graphic card, no soundcard

Computer B: share the same removable IDE harddrive with computer A, but using SIS IDE chipset, Nvdia graphic chipset, with sound card.

in another word, these two computers has totally different hardware configration. How can I create a different hardware profile for computer A if I install the windows2000 Pro from the Computer B. Thanks

I dont think you can. The only thing remotely close to being abvle to do what you are asking is sysprep, and that is only for a one time change, not an everyday type thing.
Id be interested if anyone else has opinions on this as well...
 
Control Panel... System... Hardware... Hardware Profiles... Copy.

Make the new profile *before* moving the hard drive to the second machine.

If the IDE controller chips use different drivers, there's additional juggling that you must do, but I can't imagine that's on the test.
 
well, this question isn't for the test. I am just trying to solve the problem when u see "inaccessible device" when u move the harddrive to a different hardware. 🙂 I know the Control Panel... System... Hardware... Hardware Profiles... Copy. 🙂

I thought making a copy of the the profile does exactly that.
What I mean is, if everything else has changed mobo, hard drives, etc, the copy is going to see exactly what the old one saw. Yeah you can modify the hell outta it. but that is assuming your OS doesnt give you the blue screen from so many changes.

I know that I tried putting in a second video card in my 2k machine and it blue screened. in another machine though it took it no prob. Every sysytem is different.
 
The inaccessible boot device (STOP 7B blue screen) is a result of the IDE controller chips using different drivers, which is a pitfall I mentioned.

To make this work, first install the OS on computer A. Install the SIS IDE drivers. Make sure the SIS drivers are set to boot-start. Copy the profile. Move the drive.

PnP will redetect everything. You should be fine.

can u give me more details? what if the OS is installed with the SIS IDE chipset controller first? How can I install the intel one? and can u point me to where I can set the driver to boot first? thanks
