windows zip files take 2-3 minutes to unzip ANYTHING

here's the deal. new laptop, asus a8js. winxp pro, sp2. anytime I try to use the built-in zip support, it takes about 2-3 minutes to actually unzip any file (even a text file) after I double click it. I unregistered the DLL and still gave me the same error. I said f*ck it and went with winrar thinking my problem was fixed. I went to install office 2007 and I basically had the same problem where anytime I opened a file, it would take 2-3 mintues to actually open but everything else is mad speedy fast. I have no idea what it is and I'd like to figure it out before I format. I just haven't been able to find anything like this anywhere else. help please!
