Windows XP's Firewall vs Zone Alarm

How well does Windows XP's built in firewall work to say a program like Zone Alarm? Does it do the job?

The XP one does not catch any outbound connection made by programs, ie trojans

absolutely true!

and the XP one is annoying to configure. you do it by port, whereas with zonealarm it is by application.
