Windows XP

Well, I'm sure all my fellow geeks here have been talking about this for months already, but I just heard about it. Any thoughts? Sounds like a complete re-work to me, like 3.1->95, now it's ME/2000->XP.

You mean Whistler? Thats the next windows, and it is compleetly redone. Its coming out in September.

Edit: Ah, right. Whistler is now called XP.

It's not being redone. Windows 2k is Windows NT 5.0, Whistler is Windows NT 5.1. The Windows 9x kernel is going in the trash. There will be Professional and Home versions (also Advanced Server, etc.) The Home version will have the NT kernel sans support for SMP. The only thing really being overhauled is the UI, and from what I have seen it is for the worse.

Windows XP is minor upgrade from a technical standpoint, a major upgrade from a marketing standpoint.

no, more like throwing 9x in the trash, and i kindof like it, Nt 2k is alot better, I'm a new convert, too bad though os's like beos and qnx, are all goind to web apliance, or embeeded stuff.

Ahhhhhh, but! If it's the only Windows OS out there, developers will be required to support it . . . which FINALLY means dual processor support in the OS AND complete software compatibility (ie, GAMES, of which there are many that don't work well in Windows 2000).

I'm glad to see that others will now enjoy a better OS than the 9x hell. Windows 2000 has been on my system(s) (any many different ones over the time... 😉) and will continue to be on there until something better comes out.

Windows XP is just NT 5.1. M$ has incorporated alot of stuff into it unfornately when M$ does anything it gets waterdown. It has a firewall but Zone Alarm is better. It has a zip program built in but zip magic is better. It has a skin but windowblinds is better.

If you have Windows 2000 there is no real reason to upgrade. If your using windows 98 than upgrading will be very attractive.

M$ schedule:

beta 2: febuary 28
RC1: March
RC2: April
RTM: May 30

I also heard that there may be a annual subscrption for it. A microsoft spokesperson eluded to it in a interview with CNN.

Wow, a thread with a bunch of people who think they know more about an un-released product than the next person....

I'm looking forward to it, though. From what I've read, it's an OS that combines the stability of Win2K and the compatibility of Win9x. It should be pretty sweet.

Ah sh*t, I wonder if these guys are in with Symantec and the rest, because everytime MS comes out with something, it's followed by the rest. They're putting this stuff out so fast corporate america will never catch up.
