I have a friend who wants me to network his two computers (laptop and a desk top)together for him since I am an IT Student, but I don't have a lot of experience with XP as for as networking. I am running Xp Home at home, but no network.
He wants to skip the router or switch and just connect the computers together through the ethernet ports. He has his DSL modem connected via USB and the computers are connected with cat 5e and I set them up where I can see his laptop from the desk top, but I can't access anything and I can't see his desk top from the laptop. Someone before me tried to set it up, but didn't know what they were doing. I did the little work that I did on his computer this morning at 4:00am so I didn't really feel like dealing with it. I know the problem has to be the settings because when I try to map to the laptop from the desk top it gives me an error and states that the administrator must give you permission to access this computer. I am unfamiliar with navigating through XP so can anyone help me by telling me where I have to look to find the permissions to let the desk top access files on the laptop.
He wants the laptop to be able to access the internet through the desktop and share files. He said he had it running on an older computer running XP, but he was unsure how to share files. However, now he has a new computer and doesn't remember how the old one was set up. Can anyone help?
