Windows XP won't boot.

The computer was looking to my c: drive for the boot.ini, the boot.ini would tell the computer to boot from my H: drive. Well, my c: drive took a dump. there is a perfectly valid windows install on the H: drive. Now that I don't have a c: drive, how can I tell the computer to boot from the H:\windows install?

the surefire get you out of a pickle option:
format a floppy with any version of windows from 2000 up.
copy boot.ini over from this same machine. edit if necessary.
copy ntldr, ntdetect.com over.
Boot with floppy.

You can also use your XP cd and boot to recovery console and do a fixboot & while you're there sort out what should be in the boot.ini by using the "map arc" command.

Ok, I could make a bootable floppy and do it, how about making either the new C: drive or the D: drive bootable? I tried copying autoexec.bat, config.sys, io.sys, msdos.sys, ntdetect.com ntldr and I used the map arc command to make a bootini based on booting from the D: drive that was formerly the H: drive. Every time I boot I get invalid operating system disk. Are there any other files I would have to add to the c: or the d: in order for it to boot without a 3 1/2 foppy?

🙁

Well after I copied those file I booted off the windows cd and it found the previous version of windows I had, I tried to repair it but after it was done with the first part it still will not boot off of the HD. Is it even possible to get my install of windows to boot again or am I going to have to make a new install?
