I normally run 2k i tried XP when it first came out hated it, tried linux and wussed out within hours so here i am running XP.

Moving the mouse and clicking on something causes winamp to lag, basically doing anything at all lags, its pathetic.

Network performence is also really low im getting 6k from nvidia and other sits with normally good amounts of bandwidth

i already got all the updates from windowsupdate whats the problem here?

Here's what I think.
Memory size is good.
HDD speed is good
MS's updates are all installed.

?Are all chipset drivers up to date? Manufacturer Website, or Chipset MFR Website (VIA, right?)
?Defrag? Sounds gay, but can have something to do with it
?Excess BS? Do you have a lot of applications running in the systray?

?Posessed by Daemons? I can't think of anything else, XP ran just fine on my P3 w/256M Ram....

If this has seemed to be fairly recent, you might try to do a "system restore" to a time frame before this started. It will not lose your data files but will restore WinXP to it's status at the date desired. It sets some of these restore points automatically so there should be plenty to chose from. Hey, give it a shot, you can also reverse it if you want.

If you have a VIA chipset make sure you have the latest 4in1drivers installed. You should also have the latest detonators from nVidia as well. Make sure your DMA mode is on for your hard drives.

havent defragged
0 proggies in systray i even uninstalled windows messenger

This is a fresh install of Winxp and it has done it from the moment of install so no point in system restore.

how do i check DMA mode for my HD's?

found DMA and its set to DMA if available

Have you tried another kind of audio software? Does it do the same thing with Windows Media or Realplayer, for example? Make sure its not just a WinAmp problem.

Have you downloaded and run any of the XP updates yet? You might try that also. I still think that if you look into the System Restore points you will find one that corresponds from the first load of XP timeframe. Restore that and try your audio again. You can't say that you just loaded XP and tried to run an audio file immediately after the load finished. I'm sure you installed/tweaked/ did something(s) to it.

it does it under both winamp and WMP.

I installed all windows updates updated all drivers and VIA 4-in-1's

still does it and system performence is poor at best in all fields

Just did a virus check, none.

just installed and ran WC3, It runs fine for the most part, half as fast in loading as 2k but actually playing it i could tell almost no difference except for the random lag i would get 1 at least every 15-30 seconds just like everything else in Windows XP so far though...

Rather puzzling indeed, try these steps: (These steps are for classic view, not the default XP setup)

(1) Goto Start >Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager
Check to see if you have any hardware conflicts, cause that is what it sounds like it may be.

(2) Post your findings.

(3) If you don't find anything, post your hardware details that are relevant to this situation... I would suggest posting your entire peripheral list, you can get all the info you need in the device manager, or goto Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and get the info there. You can also use this area to see if you have any IRQ sharing that doesn't need to be happening. I am still trying to figure out how in the hell to get all of my devices (like 8 of them!!!) off of IRQ 9.

LOL... Never mind I am a retard apparently. I looked at yer rig, but can you give specifics about your mouse, NIC, and which Nvidia Drivers you are using?

isnt that awesome!?
By any chance were you overclocking when you loaded XP? It is really sounding like a corrupt load of the OS, either way. Best bet is to reload because XP doesn't have these "problems" normally. Wish I could be more encouraging. :(

Wait, before we get any further into this... Did you choose the upgrade option when you installed WinXP or did you do a Clean install???

Your overlooking some setting, your problem is purely hardware based.

I definately would have to agree here. There was something amiss in this.

ok, fine if something is amiss what is it though? all drivers are the up to date, machine runs fine under 2k and other OS's

all settings are set to classic to take away from the bloat andnastiness of XP and just to help performence ( not that my machine should need it just to browse windows!)

dude, i've got the same problem. mine is laggin in winamp, WMP and worst of all my creative DVD player and it PISSES ME OFF.
I really like XP (for some reason). I love the extra settings it offers.

I'm running an amd XP 1700+, 512 pc2100, 32mg S3 graphics card, FA311 nic, SB 512, serial USR modem, Creative DXR-3 and 12X creative DVD Rom.

I've loaded all of the latest drivers, updated all of the firmware that i can get my hands on, updated windows and still have had no luck.
I've read this thread and followed all of the afforementioned advice and still no improvements. If you've got a solution or any pther tips. Please LMK. I'm tired of changing OSs. And DAMNIT when is REDHAT going to get an EASY to setup DVD player?

thnks-
chris

I heard creative DVD Players TOTALLY f*ck up Win XP, try taking it out and see if that helps you any just to see if thats the problem.

i doubt it, i think XP is just lame, every time i try it cause i hear more and more good things about it, it just gets worse and worse.

If we knew that, we wouldn't be still posting here, now would we? ;) Seriously, in situations like this it is usually something small and overlooked that is the culprit. I AM NOT saying that it is your fault and YOU screwed up; just that many times a problem has an obvious "cure" that stares us in the face that we don't see at first. Then we end up slapping our foreheads and wondering how we missed it. :D
A shot in the dark (if you still have XP loaded) have you tried doing a CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager to check on things? First, the obvious would be to see if any applications are running, then check on the "services". But the main reason is that there is a tab that is labeled "Performance". It shows the current CPU Usage. Check it before during and after you start running Win Amp to see what it does. Maybe a clue could be found there.

Try a PS/2 mouse, take the extra hard drive off for the moment. See how much faster it loads.

If no difference, then take hard drives off of RAID and see.

If still no go then remove network card, sound card and try it.

You need to narrow it down to which hardware or configuration is the issue.
