Windows XP will not load on new system

Hello, I just built a new system and am having a heck of atime getting windows to boot.

I can install windows fine, but when it reboots to go into windows, i just get a black screen. When I try to start via Safe Mode, it stalls at Mup.sys. This isn't the problem though... If I disable Mup.sys, it just stalls one earlier (perhaps the one after it?)

I removed every unneeded piece of hte system and even swapped the video card, ram, and optical drives with older equipment.

Windows 2000 installs without a hitch.

If you have any advice, it would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you!

How are you loading XP?

I'm guessing you boot of the CD, format the HD, and install the OS.....correct?

It's hanging on the first boot where you finish installing XP....correct?

Since you are receiving errors with a fresh install of xp. You should wipe it out. Delete the current partition L. You need to have a boot cd of xp. http://old.bink.nu/xpbootcd/

You can try a low level format to write 1's and 0's to your hard drive. You will have to go to vendor of hard drive to find softwart to do a low level format.

If you can't get that to work for xp then I would suggest getting a return on your xp cd. You can use 2000 until you get a return.

I'm sorry, I completely forgot the specs :p

Pentium 2.6c
Abit IC7-Max3
2GB PC3500 Dual Channel 2-3-3-6
1 x 36.7 Raptor
2 x 250 SATA WD
Asus ATI Radeon 9800 XT
Audigy 2

I'm putting XP on the Raptor, naturally. However, we tried installing to both the Raptor and the 250's with no success. We removed everything all but one stick of ram (started withjust removing 2 of them) and removed the soudn card and other hard drives. We even swapped hard drives with another system (also a raptor) and video cards (an old TNT2). Nothing has worked, but it runs 2000 just fine.

I'm not sure of the mobo revision as the ystem isn't right in front of me right now. I updated the bios to v1.3 (i think that's the newest one) and have tried everfything we can think of. Anyway, thanks for hte help and sorry i forgot to post that information :-/

I've ran into systems that hung on the install repeatedly. A couple of times it was the cd of XP I was using. One of the times I received a new cd from the system builder and the install went with no errors. I've also ran into cdrom drives that appeared to work normally any other time, but on the install of windows, corrupt the install files somehow. If you can, you might try a different disk or cdrom.

Yeah, I tried different XP discs (an orignal, a copy and a 6in1) and none of them worked. Thanks for the advice though :)

Try taking out everything not needed for basic operation. Sound card, extra drives etc. Then install Windows, add in each component after you get the OS loaded. One at a time.

I recently tried to reinstall WinXP, and it continually hung/bluescreened on me during the install.

Turns out I had the onboard sound enabled in the motherboard's BIOS, and it wouldn't play nice with my Audigy2 during the install.

I don't know if that's your problem, but it's something to check!

My clean install of XP Pro hung because of my ti4200's dvi connection(even had issues with the analog connection)

I used a tnt2 with its analog connection to install XP Pro and then switched back to the ti4200 with no problem

I would highly suspect the RAM. I had a similar issue with some Geil ram. Never did get my system to work correctly with that stuff. Switched to some Crucial RAM and have had excellent stability since. Please let us know the outcome.

If you don't have SP1 with XP then I'd suggest downloading it and making a slipstream disc on another system to use. You can also boot from the XP CD and from the recovery console run fix boot and if needed fixMBR. Running chkdsk /r/f wouldn't hurt either. Then try a fresh, clean install of XP.

I've done basically everything listed above, unfortunately.

I actually did swap with a TNT2 tono avail, i swapped memory and tooke very possible thing out of the system (including on board via the BIOS). I've also used Windows XP, XP SP1 slipstreamed and XP 6in1 SP1 slipstreamed.

We just can't get the stinking thing to boot... We have essentially given up and are using Windows 2000
