As announced in this off-topic thread, M$ is planning to sell Windows XP for a yearly subscription fee. See this article for the details. Here's the snippet:

<< Tuesday's launch will mark Microsoft's attempt at selling subscription-based services -- a strategy it hopes will strengthen revenue down the road, >>

This definitely bears repeating.

well we'll have to pay a lot more in the long run. for people who format a lot it will be a nightmare. anyway i'm sticking with my Win2K adv. server, XP really looks like OS for newbie, even with Win2K core.

It doesn't seem clear though from the article whether or not Microsoft will be offering the option of subscription-based pricing or if all sales will be that way. Personally if they go total subscription that's gonna be the final straw. I like Win2k. I like the way XP looks. I want to play Warcraft III when it comes out, but if this happens then bye bye Windows. I'll go completely to Linux (which I've been considering for a while now anyways. KDE 2.1 is just awesome and getting better all the time.)

The person who said that does NOT work at for MS for all we knoe he could just be blowing smoke out his a$$

<<"Persuading users to upgrade is Microsoft's focus," said Chris Le Tocq, an analyst at research firm Gartner Group Inc "The people upgrading will be the icing on Microsoft's cake."

Le Tocq also thinks that Windows XP will draw more attention from consumers than businesses, although Microsoft's official line is that the operating system is suitable for both audiences.

Tuesday's launch will mark Microsoft's attempt at selling subscription-based services -- a strategy it hopes will strengthen revenue down the road, according to Le Tocq.>>

If any thing this guys is maybe talking about they way licensing might be for business customers not home users.

Sorry to burst your anti MS bubble.

Even if that's the way it is to start with, not many people will buy into it and well, it'll revert back.

I'll pay $100 bucks to keep it and do with it whatever I want as many times as I want. I tend to reinstall a system from time to time and I do NOT want to deal with licensing hassles at 3am.

Well m$ will rip us off in 2-3 years of the subscription (thatz the average life span for M$ products) so they will instead of charging us say, $200 in 1 go, they will make us pay $100 upfront, then $50 per year. and stuff like that. This way, if we use the program for more than 3 years, we actually looses. This will force us to upgrade and upgrade and upgrade forever.

Thanks m$

Nitsuj: You would only be bursting a bubble if we wanted subscription based liscensing. Nobody here was happy about hearing of this subscription stuff and nobody has showed an anti-MS attittude. If we heard that the US is going to start enslaving every 1st born child (just as an example) and we said that we would move away if this happens . . . is that an anti-US attitude? No. It's simply saying that if a company, country, or anone else pulls something so stupid then we'll pull away and head for something better. That's not an anti-anything attittude. It's common sense.

You on the otherhand from all of your posts that I've been reading seem to have some blind loyalty to MS in that any and everything they do is good. If it's not then you try and twist it to seem good or just dismiss it as a rumor.

Those guys don't have to worry. Software programs get cracked in no time. Every beta of Whistler that's been released with this new reg scheme has had a crack released as soon as it was (well, almost). The only people who get shafted by stupid liscensing of subscription thing are people who actually want to pay for the software and keep it legel.

I heard that Microsoft was going to use Office 10 first to test the waters of subscription software.

Its not blind loyalty. I am defending XP because I love using it and I want to share with people what I think is great about it, unfortunately, not being one who wants to get on MS's bad side I can't post a bazillion screen shots of the latest build, I can't reveal un announced features, I try not to talk about anything that isn't already common knowledge.

You may have also noticed that I don't rag on linux or mac, and I freak'n hate Windows ME. I tried linux, I even have a redhat CD, but although it is cool, it does not allow me run the applications I use to do my work/play. I have Beos Personal installed on my Win98 Partition, don't use it much, but its always fun to play with a new OS. I respect people's opinion's about OS's, but when they quote something as a FACT and I start seeing other people reposting the same information that is incorrect or even twisting it, I feel obligated to at least chime in and say that it is incorrect. There is allot of speculation going on about XP and people are eager to shoot it down just because it is MS software without even trying it. I'm just trying to be the other side of the coin.

Things you will never here me say, Linux sucks, MS makes perfect software, Macs are for idiots. Because none of that is true.

It scares me when Red edits one of his posts. And It really freaks me out when I see just "nevermind." after an edit. What, oh what, could he have typed that required such drastic action? :)

Haha, let it be subscription based. When someone cracks the setup, that will be that. All the warez people will be able to get this OS for say 20 bucks, and never need the subscription crap because it will be cracked. Just wait and see...it's all been tried before.

Its too bad that its plan is to "strengthen revenue down the road".
How bout they strengthen the OS! :D
