Windows XP VPN connection problem

I am trying to get a VPN connection to work between two computers, one is a desktop that is always on, its a Compaq DeskPro running Windows XP Pro, with a fixed IP, the other is a Compaq laptop also running XP Pro. I believe the connection on the laptop is set up properly, it connects to the other machines IP, but when it says "verifying username and password" it times out with error 721, which implies the host computer is ignoring the connection. Anybody have any ideas? The host is behind an SMC firewall with all the ports set up to forward that I think are needed...(1723, 500, 50, 51, as well as 80). Since the client seems to connect to the correct IP, I don't think thats the problem. On the client I have the option to "use default gateway on other computer" unchecked, and on the host I have the properties set to use dhcp for an IP from the client, and the option to let the client specify an IP checked. Everything looks as if it should work, so I am at a loss.

have you allowed protocol 47 on your firewall. its not port 47 but the gre protocol. the firewall not allowing that protocol would give the symptoms you mention, as wehn it tries to secure the data channel it cant.
