Windows XP Upgrade

Ok, I want to install Windows XP (Home) upgrade...
I can't find the CD for my old copy of Win98SE but I do have the booklet w/ the CD key. (The old OS has been replaced by Linux, so it's not on the hard disk anymore.)

Do I need the CD or do I just need the CD key to install? 😕

you'll definitely need the win98 cd if you want to do a clean install of xp.
if win98 is already on your hdd then you can do the upgrade without the win98 cd.
 
If you have a legal CD key, you can borrow a friend's 98 CD for the upgrade validation (if you're planning on doing a clean install).
 
Bacillus: How do you upgrade with Win98 on the HDD? I tried to do that, but the installer only looked in the CD-ROM and wouldn't let me specify another location.
 
You have a legit license so it is irrelevant if the CD is original or copied from a friend. When you buy Software, you actually buy the license and not the CD.
 
I guess this means I gotta find my Win98SE disk (ain't gonna happen) or return the upgrade version and get a new version :frown:

Here is a legal, OEM full version for cheaper then retail upgrade versions. Same thing just not as much documentation.

Yea, but pretty much anything qualifies as hardware. You can get a $1 adapter or somthing and it's being shipped with hardware 🙂
 
XP home will update from win95. If you can find a cd of that, start the install of XP, and when it asks, put the 95 cd in for it to read. 95 or 98 do not need to be installed, you just need to have a cd.

err. no - actually MS's definition is 'fully assembled computer or non-peripheral hardware'. An A/V cable ain't either of those.
