Windows XP update

I use Win xp with IE 8, I want to do a windows update, I went to the update section, it wants to install MS Framework 1.1 Service pack 1, during installation it encounters a problem with sl56.tmp, consequently it ceases installation and needs to close. before doing the update, I have done a restart and paused protection on the antivirus program, is there anything else I should have done before I started the installation. I looked in MS knowledge base but I can't find any info relevent to my problem.
