windows XP - unknown device detected

recently reinstalled XP, I installed the Nforce drivers, and the drivers for my Razer mouse/sound card. I have no other cards in my system and no USB devices hooked up. When I boot I get a windows found new hardware. and it comes up as unknown. Since I installed my MB drivers, and my mouse/keyboard/sound card all have drivers installed and are working properly. How do I figure out what the hell the unknown device is?

That is a good question, and I have the same "problem." It is not affecting my system in any way, it's just sitting there with an obnoxious yellow "?" on it in the device manager.

Is it a Dell? My parents have 2 dell laptops that I formatted for them and both have an unknown device that I haven't been able to find drivers for. I have no idea what it is but it hasn't seemed to affect anything. :shrug;

Dell laptops - might be the card reader if there is one --

I have the same thing. The only way I can eliminate it is to disable the lower USB Root Hub in device manager. The downside is my printer won't work so I have to re enable it when I want to print or scan. Never happened till I got my Abit KN8-SLI.

No it's not a Dell, as far as card readers nope. I built the system, and I know what I bought it's not affecting anything I can notice, but it's annoying somewhat.

Are you sure it's not some other motherboard doodad that the Nforce drives don't cover (raid, pciqxtmc bus or some other thing)?

I love it when Windows does that, it gives you absolutely no way to figure out what device is what so you can't even try to find drivers for the device.

don't know the model # but it's a basic Gigabyte 939 board. I have RAID disabled in the bios, aside from onboard sound (disabled) network (working) and SATA it doesn't have anything I know about. My previous windows XP install (on the same box to a tee) didn't have this unknown hardware.

since it doesn't seem to be effecting my computing I'm going to leave well enough alone ha.

are you running a radeon video card by chance? if so you need to install the WDM driver from AMD/ATI

Run it .. it will tell you what the Unknown Item is .. then you can find the correct Driver for it
