My girlfriend just called me up and is having a problem with her pc. Shes running windows xp with sp1 I believe. She explained the problem as only being able to see her wallpaper and move her cursor. When she presses ctrl-alt-del she can see the running processes but they are not displayed. No start menu, icons etc... If you have a solution or idea behind this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That's not really a fix. The results will provide more clues though. If it works it can be used as a workaround until solved.

1)Hit f8 before windows starts up and boot into safe mode-f that works ok then goto step 2

2)Reboot hit F8 and choose goto command prompt only

3)type in this

cd c

scanreg /restore

4)Window pops up and choose a previous registry saved which started sucessfully

5)Reboot the computer

If that doesn't work then your OS is f'ed and needs to be reinstalled.
