Windows XP Starter Edition

Web browser + email is enough to service a lot of PC users.

Besides this is really old news; w/ XP Embedded OEMs could have easily built an equivilant machine if they wanted to (and some did). The only real news here is that they are going to be giving it away @ $30.

Of course this is the Register we're talking about; I take any news they have with a grain of salt.

Well, seems like The Reg was entirely correct.
Official announcement.

Three apps might be fine(well sucks, but good enough), but three windows per app? Better download Firefox/Mozilla/Opera then so you can at least have tabbed browsing.
But then, there goes one of the precious apps.
But then again, at 800x600, much of the web will be virtually unusable.

It was a bad idea from the start. Yeah a braindead copy of XP Crap Edition ~$25 more than a copy of full-blown XP? Sure, they'll pay it.

Sucks. Simple as that. BUt it is suitable in super budget systems. Only drawback there is 800x600 resolution. They should've capped it at 1024x768 imo.
