I just did a fresh install of XP build 2600 so I know that its not a software problem. I notice that when I click to start a big program like IE or Word my computer starts to lag. LIke the mouse will fall behind and have to make huge jumps to catch up with where I want it to be. There is a lot of chugging going on in hard drive to. Any guesses as to the cause or is just overall my system sucks. Do I need a faster harddrive. More Ram. Faster CPU. Any suggestions anybody understand what I'm expeirencing. As soon as the program loads everything is fine and smooth but during that initial load up it laggs and its pissing me off. The worst is when I start up my Hollywood Real Magic dvd decoder. The mouse jumps around like crazy and I get unbareable lag until the app is up and running.

Sorry but may I ask a question regarding WinXP?

I heard that you have to like... register everytime you install XP. How do you bypass that?

I know that using an illegal version of XP makes no difference performance-wise, but we try not to offer support to pirates. Please ask elsewhere.

I find it hard to believe that all the people asking questions in the operating system forum have legal copies.

I do..;)

Remember This? , plus there is a lot of people with RC1 and RC2 copies they got legally as well.

But, To return to the orginal question, I've got no clue, did you ever run win2k?

If you don't want people bothering you, just say you got the corporate version, it doesn't require activation. ;)

Do you have any of the themes installed? Sometimes, the themes hog lots 'o memory and rob performance. Personally, I had one of the themes enabled and performance was quite bad at times. Once this junk was disabled, things returned to normal.

check about DMA being enabled. It would cause a major slowdown if it was off.

Good point, but I think XP has an option "DMA if Available" and this is on by default.

okay

I have no themes, nothing running in my tray except sound.

I notice that my hard drive registers as PIO mode. I have the very first model from western digital that supported ata66 at 7200rphm. Is pio not as fast as dma. or what is going on.

The slowdown is driving me nutz. I can't get it to go into dma mode. Its auto detecting and it sets it to pio mode.

Any suggestions would a new hard drive help. Is 256mb or ram not enough. My CPU's going at 900mhz right now. Any suggestions.

edit: that didn't help actually all that much,

Now I have something new to add, when I load up mp3's into wmp it makes my mouse lag big time. I'm thinking its my harddrive or something.
