Windows XP shuts down immediately!!! HELP!!!

Hey guys,

This one is way over my head. I turn on my computer, and as soon as XP Pro starts up, it shuts down!

Before all the programs even load into the taskbar, things end, and it says Logging Off, then Shutting Down!

What's going on? How do I fix this?

I read something about it possibly being WProduct Activation but I have a legitimate copy of XP Pro here (got a free copy from a show for Computer Science majors).

It boots in safe mode, which is the only reason I'm able to post this.

Thanks in advance! 🙂 🙁

hmm, got me stumped. Never had that happen. Does it just reboot the computer or actually shut the computer off?

I see two possibilities.

1) I ran Adaware and quarantined about 30 things yesterday before I turned it off.

2) I turned on the computer late last night and after it rebooted many times I noticed twice that it said something like "Warning extreme heat for CPU" on the RAM Check screen, so I went over to the CPU temp settings in the BIOS and it reported normal temps, around 130 degrees or so. I switched my CPU multiplier to 100mhz instead of 133 and the warning went away. I put it back to 133 and the warning is still gone and temperatures are still normal.

Btw - I have
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 2000+
512mb ram
Geforce4 Ti4200
80GB Maxtor HD
40GB WD HD
Pioneer 16x DVD
Teac 12x10x32x CDRW

Well, you could restore the changes you made with adaware. Granted, it could be nothing, but setting things back might help.

Could also try a system restore point a few days old.

Restored quarantined files from Adaware, no luck.

System Restoring to Sunday doesn't work, even though my computer worked fine on Sunday, it says there is nothing to restore, as there were no changes.

I'm trying to update my BIOS to see if that may fix something, but now I have another problem, XP keeps saying my floppy disk is write-protected when I can clearly see it's not! I've 2 disks and they both say the same thing.

It seems that I can't run AWD-Flash without a floppy disk!

Anybody know why my computer is rebooting? Or how I might be able to run AWD-Flash?

🙁

Usually you flash BIOS in DOS (a boot disk, don't use the HDD) I know there are the "windows flash" versions but since that doesn't work try the DOS version those have ALWAYS worked for me

Might be a dumb question, but have you run a virus scan recently on the PC.... sounds suspiciously like it may have one.

Last night I managed to System Restore on my PC to early Monday night. It worked! UNFORTUNATELY, this morning as I turned it on the problem came back (and it won't let me Restore back to that time again).

However I was just in Safe Mode, and as I've been thinking its software, not hardware related, I tried to uninstall some programs.

ShopAtHomeSelect Agent? What is this? As soon as I tried to uninstall it my computer shut down!

Could this be the culprit?

BTW, I have System Suite 4.0 and Norton running simultaneously on the system. I highly doubt a virus got thru but I suppose its a possibility. I will scan shortly.

HAHA!!!! The demon has been exiled!

Whatever it was, Spybot Search and Destroy eliminated it. Damn Spyware writers!

In the words of Bugs Bunny, "Why I oughta...!!"
