Windows XP Service Pack 2 RPC Error

Installed Windows XP With SP2 Slipstreamed, and am stuck in a continuous reboot loop with the RPC error:

Windows must now restart because the remote procedure call (RPC) terminated unexpectedly.

strange. any ideas?

1) installed from clean winxp w sp2 slipstreamed cd
2) low-level formatted hard drive prior to windows installation

if you think this is a preexisting virus, where is it? if it is on the hd, wouldn't it have been eliminated via the low-level format?

could it be anywhere else? am i missing a patch? i thought sp2 resolved these issues.
help!

Sounds like you have the Virus that causes that same problem though I don't remember the name of it. Oh yeah Blaster.

Is this a Clean install? Or an Upgrade?

cleeeean install. i did fix the problem, but this worries me for future sp2 installations.

I had the same problem when I tried to install server 2003.
started happening when i set up my network.

Was it a clean install of XP with SP2 slipstreamed? Or a clean install of XP RTM (or SP1 slipstream), and then you installed SP2?

clean install of windows xp with sp2 slipstreamed.

i wasn't sure what the issue was, i booted into safe mode and did a system restore back a few days.

that worked, upon further inspection, i saw that their panda antivirus was not functioning properly either.

*UPDATE*:

it happened again to my neighbors system. any idea at all what could cause them to have this issue? it seems like an isolated issue.

could it be some other service, virus, patch that i missed? help!

the first time it happened, i used system restore to revert to an earlier date to fix it. would the pre-existing virus theory still be valid?

also, how should i remedy the problem? i could do a low-level format on it (western digital 1200jb)

scan the memory? any other ideas on how to fix it?

Is the Win XP with slipstreamed SP2 install infected with the virus that jumped on from the computer that made the CD? Scan it with a computer that has a virus scanner installed.

1. Do you have any secondary drives connected to your system with data files?
2. Did you backup data files prior to reformatting, then later restore these files to your new install?
3. Did you reset the master boot record (FIXMBR from the recovery console, or FDISK /MBR from a 9x/DOS command prompt) prior to formatting?
4. Are you networked to any other computers?

You have run an up-to-date virus scanner on the system, right?

is the machine on a NETWORK? If so, disconnect it from the network, format and reinstall FRESH, then install Antivirus software BEFORE you put it back on the network.

Also, I'd recommend Symantec Corporate over Panda, any day of the week.

1. there are no secondary drives
2. i did not restore any old files to the new install
3. i did not do this, should i? i did notice that after i did the low-level format and reinstalled windows, it put windows on the F: drive instead of C:

i bought a new hd, and the same thing occured. this is very strange. i uninstalled panda, and the rpc error seemed to go away.

this could be attributed to either panda antivirus titanium or their new 'truprevent' technology.

anyhow, i am going to try out symantec corporate antivirus and see if it still happens.

I dont like panda for this resoan i had for awhile then it stop updating. I deinstalled the program and was getting errors in outlook. So i did a fresh install with sp2 so for so go. I tihink it maybe PANDA

installed symantec corporate antivirus, didn't run into the rpc error. strange. will keep you posted if things should change.

I have seen driver installations that made use of calls to loopback addresses fail because of the service pack's behavior for calls to other than 127.0.0.1. Maybe that's what was happening with Panda.

I've applied the hotfix on all of my systems running Windows XP SP2. You never know when something like this might bite you.

just an update/follow-up.

so, i really think the problem was with sp2 and pandas truprevent technology. either way, havent had the problem since.
