Windows XP resale question

I'm selling my dell laptop on ebay. It came with an operating system, and the WinXP key is stickered onto the bottom of the chassis. My question is, would it be legal to include a burned windows XP CD with this legit key?

Dell doesn't always include the media when they sell their laptops, I think they store it on a partition on the hd, iirc. A burned copy is fine, I'm sure.

I bought a laptop for my sister and it's on the HDD (XP Home). I deleted it and put XP Pro on thinking that there would be a CD somewhere in the package but nooooo nothing.

Dell is definitely cutting corners, but they're still cheap!

email dell. if your system is under warranty, they should provide it for you.

otherwise, as a buyer of your laptop, i'd be very skeptical when i receive a burned CD.

yes.

people actually believe they are entitled to their own copy of winxp on a laptop?

here is how it works: when you buy a laptop with winxp installed you don't own that disk just the software on the comp so if you reformat you're SOL. you aren't entitled to a disk if you "call/email dell and ask for it" and they'll tell you.

as far as the program, technically since you deleted it off the laptop no you don't have to include. remove the label and make sure you tell the buyer that it doesn't have the XP on it.

Oh, and my laptop has an XP Home key on the bottom, and XP Corp on it. It amuses me how often people call me out on that. So often, in fact, that I started carrying one of the license sheets for XP Corp in the bag with it.

Then again, being a DTR, my laptop spends an enormous amount of time on it's roof, swapping batteries. So people get to see the sticker a lot.

That is complete BS. I had just bought a Gateway laptop, and I wanted to reformat. But nope, no disc. Since I have the key on the bottem, I just downloaded the ISO from torrent.

Sure he did, but he either wants to keep it, or else he lost it.
You're an idiot and a troll. I've bought 7, yes 7, Dell laptops in the past two months or so. There are NO CD's included. Not even ones with the drivers, etc.

Pardon me if I'm incorrect..but for example: you have purchased a laptop licensed for a copy of WinXP Home. If you were supposed to be SOL if you formatted, then why would they give you a key with the system!?

You are you paid for a liscense when you bought the laptop. it is not one time use.

I need some of whatever you're smoking.

People here amuse me...

If it's got a legit sticker on it with a license, you can install xp home on it over and over and over and over again.

My suggestion is find someone who'd be willing to let you copy or download an xp home disc from dell... come to think of it I might have one I could put up as an iso for ya.

thanks for the replies guys. I think i'm confident enough i won't get sued. I know dell disks are different, but finding the ISO shouldn't be a problem =P thanks for the offer though

oh and it's not really about entitlement . . . i couldn't really care less what peopel expect. i'm just hoping it'll up the bid price a tad

Windows XP CD Keys from OEM license stickers work on any computer you want.

As long as the OP is including a burned copy of the Dell Windows XP CD (and not a corporate or pirated version) than he should be fine.

Yeah, so what? I've bought over 50 in the last 2 years the exactly the same way, because my company has the corporate version, and they get imaged. That still doesn't make it legal to sell them with burned copies of XP!! If I bought the laptop from the OP, and he sent it to me that way, I'd be pissed. If he didn't make good with a legit copy, guess who I'd be calling. He should have done what someone else said, and sold it with no operating system, or got a cd from Dell.
