Windows XP "quirkiness"

Is anyone else disappointed by Windows XP and it's certain quirks? For me, installion was a true and total bitch. I had to update my BIOS and remove every PCI device except my video card to get XP to install correctly. It took me about ten tries before everything was configured correctly to stop it from locking up during installion. I was pretty forgiving on that end; I understand XP no longer relies on DOS to run. I was quite happy after installing it, I had no immediate problems whatsoever -- until I tried to access my email in Outlook Express. No matter what I do, I cannot get it to connect to my POP server. I'm someone with a moderate amount of computer knowledge, and it just completely baffles me why Outlook will not connect to my ISP's mail server. On top of that, playing TFC or Counterstrike is a total nightmare with the prevalent mouse bugs. I have seen a few posts about this, and I totally sympathize with you all. Considering that I am addicted to TFC, it's a shame that I can no longer play with any acceptable accuracy. The mouse is just plan screwy. I've also noticed RealPlayer crashes on me quite often while playing movies, this may be because I have not downloaded any patches from the Windows Update server.

Sorry if this seems like a bitch session, but overall I enjoy the stability of Windows XP. I just wish I could play my damn Half-Life again.

Hmm Im happy with XP. Upgrade went nice and smooth and had no problems after a few weeks I decided to do a clean install just to do it and had no problems either. Maybe you should try going back to 2k or Win98se or dual booting for games.

Yeah, that's what I decided to do. I now have Windows 98 and XP dual booted. It serves its purpose for now.

i also had no problems w/ xp install. i upgraded from win 2000 pro and everything went smooth, so smooth in fact that all i did was start the process, then went to dinner, when i came back, it was all but finished. no probs at all, all i needed was a new driver for my HP P1000 printer.

I've had the same experience as Presence and 6TNINE. I switched to XP a couple of months ago. The upgrade from Win2K Pro to WinXP Pro was very smooth; I only needed to update a couple of drivers. However, I'm a "corner-tucker" so after 3 days I reformatted my C partition and did a clean install of XP. Again, everything was smooth and easy.

ditto! Went from Win98 to XP....smooth as babies butt. Later format c drive and did a clean install, again smooth as a hot babe's butt! 😀

yes, i encountered possibly the worst installation EVER...

first, it enabled my mouse during the setup, but finalized my mouse was nowhere to be found...

WORSE...

neither was my keyboard....i couldn't back anything up w/out a mouse or keyboard...horrible...had to reinstall
same problem - got the keyboard to work after fiddling w/ bios settings...got onto the net and downloaded mouse drivers that luckily enabled my mouse to function...

i've had better success installing mandrake, win9x, win2k, etc....

there's a few quarks in XP, but i suppose once software comes out that's intended to run under this platform, all will be well...there's a price u pay when changing platforms - i never expect compatbility to be 100%

Exactly nortexoid.

Like I said, once I configured my computer properly, Windows XP setup ran flawlessly. It's just the process of getting to that point that left me totally frustrated. Suffice to say I was extremely excited when I saw that the install process actually completed without locking up. I think my big mistake was not updating BIOS from the beginning -- the revision on my computer was January 2000, and the XP manual mentions to upgrade the BIOS (I have a KT7-RAID). But since my computer is relatively new I thought that I would have no problems. Once I upgraded the BIOS and enabled "Plug and Play OS" in the settings it seemed to work fine.

But the Half-Life mouse issue still sucks. Oh well, nothing is perfect. 😉

i didn't see your half-life mouse bug issue...i just played it for the first time on XP about 30min ago...

this is terrible...what happened to mouse sensistivity settings?...it's screwed...somebody suggest i use two settings that unfortunately had no effect...

keep me posted if u find a "patch"/workaround for it - i'll do the same.
