Windows XP Protection Being Cracked ALREADY.....

I am surprised that the crack already exists. I am glad that it is that simple, just editing the registry.

The funny thing is, it's the people who will seek out this crack and find it easily that are the ones Microsoft is targeting. To make the crack so evident and simple is preposterous. Are they trying to protect themselves from Joe Blow consumer? Joe Blow will have a hard time skinning his UI in XP, much less hacking the registry to get a free copy of it.

I don't want a FREE copy of it! But also I don't want it contacting
MS everytime in go on the net or when I change a harddrive or motherboard.

This crack has been known for several weeks, this is not a new crack. The version of XP thats mentioned is not even the newest.

Lets see if it works in the final version.

i don't want to get off on a rant here.. .but

MS will never win.
it is a match like this

Microsoft : limited time and money (well money only to a certain extent 🙂
vs.
EVERYONE : people that know anything about anything that are willing to aid the cracking process. this is happening 24/7/365. there is no way that microsofts gay little 9 to 5 programmers that just got out of highschool programming 1 can beat the other team

but thats just my opinion i could be wrong.

crazychicken: You may well be right (and I agree with you).

But it's the same old story, your group is rather small, it's like Overclockers. OCers are a huge minority, companies that make the big bucks make prebuilt systems that just work for Joe Consumer that doens't know or care (or could come close to understanding) what's inside.

It's like Rogue said that Joe Consumer can't do registry editing anymore than he can tell the difference between an Asus and an MSi motherboard.

But the question is, how many Joe Consumers are using illegal copies of Windows now? Most of the illegal copies of Windows are going to be in the "Enthusiast" group I think. Most people that couldn't figure out this crack are most likely already using Legal copies of Windows (which is I believe what Rogue is getting at but it's a little early so I might have that backwards 😉)

So the big question for Microsoft becomes:
How many people are currently using illegal copies of windows that aren't tech savvy enough to crack XP?

I personally think that it's a fairly small group..but I could be wrong.

(Assumption: this crack will work in Windows XP GR, and not just the betas. If General Release fixes it then my whole post is meaningless 😉)

crazychicken,

there is no such thing as prefect program. the more features added to a program, there more chance there will be bugs. It doesn't matter how strong the encryption is, if people wants to crack it, it WILL cracks. Just a matter of time.

No one is aiding the crackers, they do it for fun, and for the name in the underground society. There are about 5% of the people who can get a copy of the windows xp. That is a small percentage of regular customers. And for cooperation users, needless to say, they need a licensed copy, and this is where the big money come from.

and FYI, Microsoft doesn't have a fix 9 - 5 schedule, it's fexible. As long as you able to hand in project ontime, you don't even have to show up to work. It's one of the best environment to work at in the US.

lol i know - thats pretty much w/ all programing jobs (flexible schedule) - i just put that in there to help my story 😉

This crack was made on Windows XP build 2446. The current build is 2458, though I don't know how often they change this registration thing. I can guarantee that this particular crack will not work on final XP.

I agree with Greg on this. I don't want a free warezed copy, I just don't want MS peeking over my shoulder if I need to reformat my HD or swap my processor or whatever. Plus, no way, no how, never, will I pay a yearly renewal fee that they are talking about. I plan on insidiously sneaking Linux on my wife with the new system I am building, then I won't have to worry about it. 😉

NORIAKI:
are u kidding? "enthusiasts"?? Can you picture how many people have simply taken it home from work, installed it, or maybe even burned it, then brought it back?!

i can tell you ive seen it at EVERY employer ive EVER worked for...

and it definately doesnt take a rocket scientist to install or burn a copy of windows 98...

I plan to peacefully purchase a copy of XP just I have with previous Win OSes. If a crack is available to get around the annoyances MS imposes on us with hardware-locking, I will likely apply it. If I'm forced to rent the software, I won't even bother.

Unless MS greatly enhances the hardware-locking in the release version I expect it too will be easily cracked.

Seems Microsoft forgot the day when they said all the other software companies that used a lock on their software were bad. MS would trust the world and took must of the protection off their software. But once they become BIG BROTHER things changed 😀

It does not matter if this is for 2446 or what not.

I have beta 2 right here and there is a crack for it already...

WorkingMan,

Yep. In years past MS dumped their software on the market to gain market share. Now they have 80%+ MS in most areas they feel they can finally clamp down. I'm betting any profits they gain by making this move will, in the long term, be lost by reduced market share. But apparently they don't care at this point.
