Windows XP Professional x64 is GOOD!

The TRIAL should be out soon I recommend all Athlon 64 users give it a try.

It evens runs great on a laptop.

The "32 bit is fine" camp didn't realize that Micrsoft would really improve Windows XP this much before Longhorn gets released.

So what exactly has improved?

Performance? Maybe being given the choice of what to install/not install?

I'm curious.

Why worry about the trial at this point? The full & update versions will become available on April 25th and current owners of XP will be able to trade their version for a copy of XP 64.

Do you know if this offer will be extended to XP Home users? I have no XP Pro copies, but have 2 XP Home licenses.

I am willing to be NO, but maybe someone has heard otherwise.

i heard they re-did the network stack making networking in 64 is a lot faster. I heard it also ran slightly faster and was more responsive. As more things become optimized for 64 bit you will see more of a difference.

It'll be a no; MS is not producing a Home version of XP64, it's going to remain a workstation+ product at this time. This is to be expected though, with any major transition you're going to start with the power users, and limiting is to XP Pro is the best way to do it.

Cool.

What did they change?
How's the driver support starting to look?

I installed it on a laptop for someone and everything loaded fine except the 56k modem. Not a big deal though since he uses wireless for a net connection.

It's based on all the improvements in Windows Server 2003 and then some. Says NT 5.2 instead of NT 5.1.

True but some people may not want to fully jump to 64 bit until things mature even more. Running the 180 day trial will give opportunity to check for problems with the hardware you are planning on using.
