Windows XP Professional Installation

When installing windows xp professional it's having troubles copying over files, and randomly it says "blah.sys" cannot be copied or something like that. Is this a sign of a bad CD? I've looked at it and i don't see too much in the way of scratches?

One other thing to check is the memory. Is this a new build? I've seen bad memory cause problems like you are describing. Also check the CD drive. I had one drive that would work fine for short periods (1-3 minutes) but for anything longer it would fail.

I agree; before requesting replacement media I would try swapping CD drives, IDE cables and controllers (if possible in your enviroment).

No point on waiting for them to send out a replacement if it is just a problem with the IDE cable...

I actually had the same problem...and did a diag. on my memory and it was the memory.

Try to do a diag on memory before you replace the cd drive

My roommate had a similar problem when installing linux, some random file wouldn't copy correctly. It was his ram that was causing the problem.
