They have to give this stuff away free at colleges, otherwise the kids will use what IS free (Linux) or steal Windows anway. No college kid is gonna pay $200-300 for an OS when they have other options. Might as well keep them hooked at a young age than risk losing some (even if it's small) percent to Linux. Actually, Microsoft isn't alone in this. Adobe, Macromedia, and others do this too. When these same people graduate, what do you think those graduates are going to demand when they get a full time job?

However, it's a good deal if you are in college and need Microsoft software anyway.

I bought my XP "upgrade" copy for $25 I think. The only difference between it and the "full" version? It has the word "upgrade" on the disc. I didn't do anything but complete format and reinstall. No previous versions of Windows required.

educational discounts are great. My brother is using them to the fullest advantage. He is making 6 figures or more and *now* a full-time student too.

The freaking dude is insane, had an interview down here a week after they replied asking him if he has Telephony certification....he read 2000 pages and got Cisco's by the interview date.

He has the whole macintosh/apple catalog at home.

He and I both dislike the casual class taker/ebay freak though.

Too bad my school sells WinXP for like $100000000000. Forgot exactly how much but definitely a rip off..damn UC system. (all the Cal-states have it for $11).

We also have Office 2003 student for $159..wait, doesn't Fry's sell the academic version for $99?! WTF!? POS school.

UT Austin as has a deal with Microsoft, and has for quite a while.

They know him well, he reported himself messing up his first two years of running a side business, paid them what he should have owed. They came back with 'well that was about 4 years ago, there are penalties'....he ended up paying more than he made with that business the first 2-3 years. 🙁

He has a tax pro now.

software works well, makes it easy. You have to understand taxes though to make sure you are covered.

I think you only have an outside understanding of this.

The softwares saves a 'file' you would bring that. You would also be required to bring your supporting documentation. That is all you'd need.

I don't think who does your taxes has any bearing on how the IRS looks at things. I think everyone would rather an accountant worry about their taxes, a lawnman do their lawns, have a shopper, a cook, etc. It's just not realistic for most, and most are actually as a whole having a greater chance of being audited.

If your school's too cheap to have an "arrangement" with microsoft, then this is a great way to go as their Acad price can not be beat.

Newegg supplied my two youngest kids with the Acad version of XP Pro, but only after getting a copy of their college or university IDs. 😀😀😀

I agree that doing your own either with or without software is asking for an audit (assuming you do a schedule "A" or "C" or both - i.e.anything but standard).

The third-to-the-last time I got audited, the costs were Accountant $1800, IRS $800.
The second-to-the-last time; I used software and it was dead even - no fees or penalties.
The last time, the IRS pulled into the lead in spite of the records and the software - $6,000 including penalties and interest. Had an accountant been involved from the beginning, I probably would have paid the less in taxes, and avoided the penalties and interest.

The very first time was rather interesting, as I got back $13,000 ? only after I switched accountants.

WEll i can get XP for FREE FREE FREE since im an engineer at UCLA. I can always get any other MS OS and Visual Studio, and Visio and a bunch of other software i don't use.

Microsoft alliance is GREAT!!!!

Though only thing that is a bummber is that you have to download it yourself, no "real cds" and they email you the product licencse key
